Providing education and training to Plymouth, Devon, Cornwall and the wider community
The College encourages students to participate in regional and national competitions relating to their course or vocational field. The College feels that success in these prestigious events gives students a head-start in their chosen vocation.
Feedback from students who have already participated in competitions strongly emphasise the enjoyment, increased confidence and additional learning that they have experienced whilst competing.
City College Plymouth is involved in the World Skills UK competitions and our principal, Viv Gillespie is the South West regional representative. The College is hosting various World Skills events including a beauty heat.
This is a network of regional and national skills competitions that run across the UK. Run annually, these competitions aim to encourage young people and adults to excel in their vocational field and are the last year to enter to compete at WorldSkills London2011.
WorldSkills London 2011 is a WorldSkills Competition and will be held at ExCel in London in October 2011. The UK was voted host nation for the 2011 Competition at the WorldSkills General Assembly meeting held in Melbourne in May 2006. The project office running this event is part of UK Skills.

Welding Students
Two College Apprentices, Ben Williams and Jason Green, competed at Central Sussex College for the Southern Regional Heat (Cornwall to Kent and includes all areas south of the Midlands) of UK Worldskills in welding. The competition was held over two days with welder apprentices from all over this region including Southampton, Portsmouth and Canterbury. The competitors had to produce four welded test pieces using the three main fusion processes which gave a maximum of 240 points. These were then marked by two judges from UKSkills to an exceptionally tough marking criteria. Both Ben and Jason did very well in the face of tough competition with Jason Green gaining third place.
We now wait to see if Jason's score is in the top ten highest of the five UK regions to determine if he progresses to the national final.
Hospitality Students
On Tuesday 16 March, nine of the College’s culinary students, studying at level 2 and 3, competed at Bournemouth Hotel and Catering Show. The team did exceptionally well with every student winning an award. One gold and best in class, two silvers, four bronzes and four certificates of merit were won.
The competition had over 800 entries from over 40 colleges nationally. City College Plymouth student, Roberta Gilmore, took part in the culinary WorldSkills event, winning two bronzes, a certificate of merit and a ‘highly commended award’, as all her dishes were above standard.
