On our course you will get a thorough grounding in the theory and practice with external visits and competitions to help you find the self-assurance and competence to pursue a career in the hair and beauty industry.

Please note there maybe potential kit and uniform costs to enable you to participate fully with your course.

Depending on your course of study, as a rough guide, the price of kit and uniform will cost between £200 and £250 (to be confirmed).

 

Progression 

On successful completion you may progress to the level three hairdressing course at the College.

Entry Requirements 

  • Work experiance involving customer care would be desirable
  • Equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience
  • An interest in fashion and hair and beauty
  • GCSE C-D or equivalent in art or design would be desirable
  • GCSE C-D or equivalent in English and maths would be desirable.

Duration 

One year

Are there any exams? 

You will be assessed continuously for progress and achievement by practical observation, external online tests and assignments.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

This course aims to develop practical hairdressing skills and theoretical knowledge related to hairdressing to enable you to gain employment within the hairdressing industry.

The subjects you will cover are:

  • customer services
  • health and safety in the salon
  • consultation skills
  • shampooing and conditioning
  • styling
  • colouring
  • cutting
  • perming.

You will need to be successful in the first year completing the diploma/certificate in hairdressing to progress onto the VRQ level 2 diploma (full award) in hairdressing.

A work placement is vital to enhance your assessment opportunities and to provide you with valuable work experience.  A placement will also help to improve your skills, ability and confidence and will enhance your prospects of progressing into employment.

Monday and Wednesday, 5.30pm - 9.00pm or Tuesday and Thursday, 5.30pm - 9.00pm

Beauty Therapy Services

Course Overview

What's it all about? 

You may already have the basic practical beauty therapy skills and knowledge and now want to develop your working knowledge to progress to the next stage, or maybe you're looking to start your career in the beauty industry.

You'll learn more detail and get more practice in providing facials, manicures, pedicures, waxing, make-up and eye treatments and we'll introduce you to the anatomy and physiology related to each treatment. We'll also teach you more about health and safety in the workplace, employment skills and reception.

The first qualification, the certificate, must be achieved before progression onto the diploma. Excellent attendance and a positive attitude are essential to ensure progression.

You will need good communication skills - you and your fellow students will practice the above treatments (even bikini waxing) on each other before you begin working on clients! In order for you to practice and perform these treatments you will need to purchase a uniform, kit of equipment and products. This will cost approximately £500 and is a mandatory requirement. Full details will be provided at interview.

Progression 

On successful completion you may continue yourstudies and work towards a level 3 qualification in body and spa therapy or nail technology at the College. You can also work in beauty salons, nail studios etc. Alternative career opportunities exist in wholesale, retail and marketing.

Entry Requirements 

In our experience in order to be successful on this level of course you will need one of the following:

  • four GCSEs at grades D-F (including English and maths)
  • a BTEC foundation diploma in a related subject
  • an NVQ level 1/technical certificate in a related subject
  • successful completion of the PLP/Prince’s Trust programme
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

This NVQ provides a framework to ensure your staff are competent in a range of skills, knowledge and understanding of the functions required in their job role.

Are there any exams? 

There are a range of external assessments as well as practical, written and oral assessments to accompany each unit. Projects and portfolios of evidence are also required for some of these units. Functional skills will be assessed.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

The main subject areas covered include:
• providing facial skincare treatment
• enhancing the appearance of eyebrows and lashes
• carrying out waxing, manicure and pedicure services.

Plus optional units:
• fulfill salon reception duties
• provide make-up services
• tanning
• nail technologies.

Beauty Therapy (Massage Route)

What's it all about? 

The world could be your oyster if you decide that beauty therapy is the course for you. You will find beauty therapists working and running salons almost anywhere - on cruise liners, at health farms and at leisure centres. Whatever career route you decide, our course can fast track you to success.

An in-depth knowledge of beauty therapy at level 2 must be achieved before this level can be taken. This course offers a more holistic approach, incorporating a massage route of modules.

Progression 

Successful students can progress to the foundation degree offered at the College.

Entry Requirements 

In our experience in order to be successful on this level of programme you will need one of the following:

  • four GCSEs at grades D-G (including English and maths)
  • a BTEC foundation diploma in a related subject at year 2
  • an NVQ level 2/technical certificate in a related subject
  • an NVQ level 2/technical certificate in beauty therapy is compulsory.

Are there any exams? 

There is continual assessment throughout the course consisting of direct observation, oral questions, written tasks and final multiple choice end tests set by the award body. A portfolio of evidence needs to be completed and maintained throughout the course, this requires time and dedication, but guidance will be given.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

Salon manager / technician duties as well as health and safety modules. Practical and theory sessions are carried out to gain this qualification. The practice and training enables you to transfer skills into a professional setting. You will be required to complete the following five practical units:

  • Indian head massage
  • body massage
  • aromatherapy massage using pre-mixed oils
  • tanning
  • anatomy and physiology.

In addition to classroom sessions, you should be prepared to commit additional time to home study and practice.

Mondays and Wednesdays, 6.00pm - 9.00pm

Barbering Techniques

Course Overview

Level 

Level Three

What's it all about? 

The course aims to teach the advanced techniques of barbering to hairdressers who wish to extend their 'gents' cutting skills and to achieve a recognised advanced qualification.

Progression 

By updating/learning new skills, completion of this course may assist and improve career prospects.

You can progress to the VRQ/NVQ Level 3 hairdressing in womens' or mens' hairdressing.

Entry Requirements 

You should be practising hairdressers and have gained a level 2 hairdressing qualification.

Duration 

Nine weeks

Are there any exams? 

You will be continually assessed in both practical and theoretical work. Online external testing is required. 

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

This course includes the following units:

  • cutting men's hair
  • cutting facial hair

Hairdressing (Women's)

What's it all about? 

This course is the ideal progression for those who have completed a level 2 course and are looking to build upon the skills already gained. With this course there are many opportunities to take part in enrichment activities such as a visit to Salon International in London, a trip to Europe or even America to the Wella Studios, photographic shoots, supporting fashion shows and much, much more!

You will need a professional hairdressing kit and two professional 'dolls heads'.

Progression 

On successful completion you may progress to the Management Practice and Advanced Techniques in the Hair and Beauty Sector Diploma at the College, or a wide range of careers in the hair and beauty industry.

Entry Requirements 

You will need four to five GCSEs at grades A*-C (including English and maths), or a level 2 qualification in hairdressing or equivalent.

Duration 

One year

Are there any exams? 

Practical competence is assessed throughout the course with a blend of external tests and assignments. All of your achievements will be recorded on your record of achievement, if applicable.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

The course includes the following:

  • advanced consultation and communication skills
  • cutting and styling
  • colouring - to include visual colour placement and techniques
  • basic colour correction
  • dressing long hair
  • creative hairdressing
  • Afro-Caribbean styling.

A work placement is vital to enhance your assessment opportunities and to provide you with valuable work experience. A placement will also help to improve your skills, ability and confidence and will enhance your prospects of progressing into employment.

When can I study? 

Three days per week plus a minimum of one day in a salon placement to gain industrial experience. For part-time, the course runs on a Tuesday evening and Thursday evening plus a minimum of one day in a salon placement to gain industrial experience.

Hairdressing (Women's)

Progression 

On successful completion you may progress to:
• an Apprenticeship in hairdressing
• the level 3 qualification offered at the College
• employment in the hairdressing industry as a salon assistant or junior stylist
• open your own business.

In our experience in order to be successful on this level of course you will need one of the following:

  • four GCSEs at grades D-F (including English and maths)
  • a BTEC foundation diploma
  • an NVQ Level 1 in hairdressing (successful completion of the Foundation Learning Tier)
  • successful completion of the Jumpstart programme
  • successful completion of the PLP/Prince's Trust programme
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

Duration 

One year

Are there any exams? 

These qualifications are mostly assignment based, with an online external exam towards the end of the course. Practical competence is assessed throughout the course.

The VRQ is a blend of external tests and assignments.

Body and Spa Therapy

This course will provide a variety of advanced facial and body therapy treatments. It will prepare you for employment by expanding and improving on your salon planning, communication skills and sales techniques alongside health and safety practices.

This versatile qualification covers varying massage techniques, electrotherapy and spa therapy, allowing you to focus or specialise in one area once you are qualified and gain employment.

  • four to five GCSEs at grades A*-C (including English and maths)
  • a BTEC first diploma in a related subject

Beauty Therapy Techniques

Course Overview

What's it all about? 

This course is fast-paced and demanding and you will learn a wide range of advanced specialist beauty techniques. With excellent attendance, attitude and a passion for the industry, on successful completion of your first year you will progress to the second year where this qualification really comes into its own, with the introduction of many more essential industrial techniques. This really is a beauty therapy qualification at its fullest!

Progression 

On successful completion you may progress to the Management Practice and Advanced Techniques in the Hair and Beauty Sector Diploma at the College, or a wide range of careers in the health and beauty industry, including cruise ships, health farms, spas and salons etc.

Entry Requirements 

Please note: successful completion of the subsidiary diploma or essential for progression to the national diploma.

In our experience in order to be successful on this course you will need one of the following:

  • four to five GCSEs at grades A-C (including English, maths and a science)
  • an intermediate GNVQ
  • a BTEC first diploma
  • an NVQ level 2/technical certificate
  • successful completion of an Apprenticeship course
  • successful completion of the Jumpstart Programme
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

Duration

Are there any exams? 

All units contributing to the course are internally assessed by a variety of methods which can include written tests and will be individually graded at pass, merit or distinction. To achieve a pass grade for a unit you must meet the assessment criteria set out in the specifications. Practical assessments will be undertaken in a suitable realistic and commercial working environment to industry standards.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

During the first year of the course you will study nine units covering the core body and facial electrical specialist units, as well as body massage, Indian head massage, core theory units and a specialist unit on maintaining personal health and well being. During the second year you will study a further eight units, which include your everyday beauty therapy techniques such as manicure, make-up and waxing to name but a few, as well as specialist techniques in hot stone massage, epilation and aromatherapy.

Full-time - approximately three to four days per week
