Can you put people at ease? Do you have loads of patience? Are you creative? Then you've got a good head start in the skills that you'll need to make a success of a career in hairdressing. On our course you will get a thorough grounding in the theory and practice with external visits and competitions to help you find the self-assurance and competence to pursue a career in the hair and beauty industry.

Please note there maybe potential kit and uniform costs to enable you to participate fully with your course.

Depending on your course of study, as a rough guide, the price of kit and uniform will cost between £200 and £250 (to be confirmed).

 

Progression 

On successful completion you may progress to the level three hairdressing course at the College.

Entry Requirements 

  • Work experiance involving customer care would be desirable
  • Equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience
  • An interest in fashion and hair and beauty
  • GCSE C-D or equivalent in art or design would be desirable
  • GCSE C-D or equivalent in English and maths would be desirable.

Duration 

One year

Are there any exams? 

You will be assessed continuously for progress and achievement by practical observation, external online tests and assignments.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

This course aims to develop practical hairdressing skills and theoretical knowledge related to hairdressing to enable you to gain employment within the hairdressing industry.

The subjects you will cover are:

  • customer services
  • health and safety in the salon
  • consultation skills
  • shampooing and conditioning
  • styling
  • colouring
  • cutting
  • perming.

You will need to be successful in the first year completing the diploma/certificate in hairdressing to progress onto the VRQ level 2 diploma (full award) in hairdressing.

A work placement is vital to enhance your assessment opportunities and to provide you with valuable work experience.  A placement will also help to improve your skills, ability and confidence and will enhance your prospects of progressing into employment.

Monday and Wednesday, 5.30pm - 9.00pm or Tuesday and Thursday, 5.30pm - 9.00pm

Hair Extensions

Course Overview

What's it all about? 

Are you interested in creating a variety of styles using a range of techniques for attaching hair extensions? This course will enable you to give your client instant volume, flashes of non-chemical colour and instant length!

Progression 

You may be interested in a range of hair and beauty courses at the College.

Entry Requirements 

Preferably, you will need to hold an NVQ level 2, or equivalent, in hairdressing.

Duration 

Ten weeks

Business Benefits 

This will enable your business to increase its income by adding extra services for clients who want non-chemical colour or to add extra volume to their fine hair.

Are there any exams? 

There are no exams or formal assessments.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

This course will give you the chance to gain a knowledge of different types of hair extensions and products. You will learn how to prepare for hair extension service, gain consultation skills needed before application of hair extensions and enable you to attach and remove hair extensions, as well as cutting and finishing them. 

When can I study?

Barbering Techniques

Course Overview

Level 

Level Three

What's it all about? 

The course aims to teach the advanced techniques of barbering to hairdressers who wish to extend their 'gents' cutting skills and to achieve a recognised advanced qualification.

Progression 

By updating/learning new skills, completion of this course may assist and improve career prospects.

You can progress to the VRQ/NVQ Level 3 hairdressing in womens' or mens' hairdressing.

Entry Requirements 

You should be practising hairdressers and have gained a level 2 hairdressing qualification.

Duration 

Nine weeks

Business Benefits 

To be able to deliver womens' and mens' hairdressing services.

Are there any exams? 

You will be continually assessed in both practical and theoretical work. Online external testing is required. 

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

This course includes the following units:

  • cutting men's hair
  • cutting facial hair
  • colour and lighten hair
  • styling men's hair.

When can I study? 

Mondays 5.30pm - 9.00pm and one full day, 9.30am - 4.00pm on 24/10/11

Hairdressing (Women's)

What's it all about? 

This course is the ideal progression for those who have completed a level 2 course and are looking to build upon the skills already gained. With this course there are many opportunities to take part in enrichment activities such as a visit to Salon International in London, a trip to Europe or even America to the Wella Studios, photographic shoots, supporting fashion shows and much, much more!

You will need a professional hairdressing kit and two professional 'dolls heads'.

Progression 

On successful completion you may progress to the Management Practice and Advanced Techniques in the Hair and Beauty Sector Diploma at the College, or a wide range of careers in the hair and beauty industry.

Entry Requirements 

You will need four to five GCSEs at grades A*-C (including English and maths), or a level 2 qualification in hairdressing or equivalent.

Duration 

One year

Are there any exams? 

Practical competence is assessed throughout the course with a blend of external tests and assignments. All of your achievements will be recorded on your record of achievement, if applicable.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

The course includes the following:

  • advanced consultation and communication skills
  • cutting and styling
  • colouring - to include visual colour placement and techniques
  • basic colour correction
  • dressing long hair
  • creative hairdressing
  • Afro-Caribbean styling.

A work placement is vital to enhance your assessment opportunities and to provide you with valuable work experience. A placement will also help to improve your skills, ability and confidence and will enhance your prospects of progressing into employment.

When can I study? 

Three days per week plus a minimum of one day in a salon placement to gain industrial experience. For part-time, the course runs on a Tuesday evening and Thursday evening plus a minimum of one day in a salon placement to gain industrial experience.

If your ambition is to develop a career in hairdressing or beauty, then this course will give you the best possible start! You can choose to study hairdressing or beauty, and develop your skills to progress through the levels of qualifications we offer in these subject areas. We place a big emphasis on working with clients to help you develop your skills and confidence for the workplace. You will have the opportunity to get plenty of hands-on experience in our full service hair and beauty salons.

The first qualification, the certificate, must be achieved before progression onto the diploma. Excellent attendance and a positive attitude are essential to ensure progression.

Progression 

All of your achievements will be recorded on your record of achievement, if applicable. However, there are written assessments, assignments and tests.

Entry Requirements 

There are no formal entry requirements, however you must show a willingness to engage and a genuine interest in the course that enables you to progress into employment or further education.

Duration

You will also get the opportunity to work towards an Award in Nail Art Applications, and an Award in Photographic Make-up.

Hairdressing (Women's)

• an Apprenticeship in hairdressing
• the level 3 qualification offered at the College
• employment in the hairdressing industry as a salon assistant or junior stylist
• open your own business.

Entry Requirements 

In our experience in order to be successful on this level of course you will need one of the following:

  • four GCSEs at grades D-F (including English and maths)
  • a BTEC foundation diploma
  • an NVQ Level 1 in hairdressing (successful completion of the Foundation Learning Tier)
  • successful completion of the Jumpstart programme
  • successful completion of the PLP/Prince's Trust programme
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

Duration 

One year

Are there any exams? 

These qualifications are mostly assignment based, with an online external exam towards the end of the course. Practical competence is assessed throughout the course.

The VRQ is a blend of external tests and assignments.

This exciting qualification will give you an overview of the hair and beauty industry, and will cover a range of subjects.

Depending on your course of study, as a rough guide, the price of kit and uniform will cost between £150 and £200.

 

 

Progression 

On successful completion you may progress to the level 2 hairdressing or beauty therapy courses offered at the College.

Entry Requirements 

There are no specific entry requirements, however good communication and people skills are an advantage.

Duration 

One year, full-time

All of your achievements will be recorded on your record of achievement, if applicable. However, there are written assessments, assignments and tests.

 

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

The level one course consists of three steps which begin with the award in an introduction to the hair and beauty sector and then progresses to the certificate, and then finally the full diploma which if achieved will give you the full qualification.

Subjects covered include:

  • nail art 
  • the art of dressing hair
  • skin care.

When can I study?

The Hair and Beauty Championships 2012

Wednesday, 21 March 2012 - 7.00 pm - 11.00 pm

This year's Hair Show, held at Plymouth Pavilions promises to be a championship event!

This spectacular show gives the City College Plymouth hair and beauty students a chance to showcase their hard work and skills. The choreographed evening will  be watched by a team of top judges, who will be looking for talent and originality among the hundreds of hair styles on display.

Topping off the evening will be a demonstration from Craig Chapman, an award-winning local hairdresser, and a special performance by the Britain's Got Talent finalist, Michael Collings.

Management Practice and Advanced Techniques in the Hair and Beauty Sector (subject to approval)

These qualifications can help you set up and run your own hairdressing or beauty business. You’ll get the skills to manage staff and resources, learn how to develop and promote your business, and develop your technical skills and knowledge to enable career progression and opportunity.

On successful completion you may progress to a level 4/5 management course at the College.

Entry Requirements 

You will be required to have prior knowledge of the hairdressing and beauty industries and hold a level 3 beauty therapy or hairdressing qualification, or equivalent, before starting this course. All candidates should have access to work experience to complete these qualifications.

Duration 

One year

Are there any exams? 

For each mandatory and optional unit chosen, you will be expected to complete an assignment. The assignments will cover practical tasks and knowledge and understanding.

City College Plymouth’s ‘Creative Solutions’ salon is offering a range of cut-price hair and beauty treatments in its Mad March discounted bonanza!

The Kings Road based salon is offering the reduced price treatments to members of the public, who will act as ‘models’ to help students with their assignments, supervised by fully-qualified hairdressers and beauty therapists.
