Cardiac arrest is the ultimate medical emergency and in the UK approximately 30,000 people sustain cardiac arrest outside of a hospital environment, this of course means that people may be called upon at any time to attempt resuscitation on a relative, neighbour, colleague or fellow traveller.
If a defibrillator is used promptly, survival rates as high as 75% have been reported.
The chances of successful defibrillation decline at a rate of about 10% with each minute of delay.
The Resuscitation Council (UK) strongly recommends a policy of attempting defibrillation with the minimum of delay. There is currently no statutory requirement under English law to provide an AED. However, the use of AEDs has been so successful in some locations that the potential liability for not having one available has been questioned. In the USA, airlines have been sued for just this reason. It may be possible that, in the future, a claim could be brought against organisations within the UK that do not equip themselves with AEDs.
There is ongoing assessment throughout the course.
A three-hour session to learn how to use AED equipment correctly and refresh on your CPR skills.
