What's it all about? 

The Professional Bartending qualification has been developed by City College Plymouth and Bar Experts, in conjunction with City & Guilds and Plymouth Gin. This hands on, practical course is designed to develop skilled and experienced bartenders. Working behind a fully equipped training bar at Plymouth Gin, you will learn how to use the correct equipment, accurately free pour and blend those perfect cocktails. At the end of this course, you will be able to wow your customers with your expert skills.

Progression 

You may progress to various other professional development courses.

Entry Requirements 

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, however, candidates should have some knowledge of bartending and cocktails.

Eight days training including assessment

Achievement of this course is assessed by the following:

  • short answer question paper
  • free pour test
  • drinks making and finding exercise.
Course Content

What does the course involve? 

The course is designed to provide knowledge and skills training to professional bartenders working in the industry, and focuses on the eight following learning outcomes:

  • accurately free pour
  • select and use equipment
  • display cocktail making techniques
  • display knowledge of cocktail specifications
  • beers, wines and spirits preparation
  • prepare bar and deliver service
  • display knowledge of spirits
  • display knowledge of responsible serving of alcohol.

The course lasts for eight days and is a combination of practical skills training and taught sessions.

When can I study? 

One day per week for eight weeks - 10.00am to 5.30pm

What's it all about? 

If your work means that you serve drinks in pubs, clubs, wine bars, café bars and hotels but you don't have any qualification to back up your experience then take a look at this NVQ. We will help you prove you have the skills and knowledge needed to work to the standards expected by your employers. You can be confident that, when you finish, you will have built up a sound professional working knowledge of all aspects of bar and restaurant drink and alcoholic beverage services.

Progression 

Successful students may progress to NVQ Level 3 Hospitality Supervision.

Entry Requirements 

In our experience in order to be successful on this level of programme you will need one of the following:

  • four GCSEs at grades D-G (including English and maths)
  • a BTEC foundation diploma in a related subject
  • an NVQ level 1 / technical certificate in a related subject
  • successful completion of the Gateway / Newstart programme
  • successful completion of the PLP / Prince's Trust programme
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

In addition, you must be employed in a position that enables them to demonstrate competence in bar work.

Up to one year

This course is aimed at bar staff who want to gain a work-based qualification.

Units include:

  • health and safety
  • customer service
  • team working
  • handling payments.

Optional units are chosen to fit the candidate's job role.

Off-the-job training can also be used to reinforce understanding where there is an identified skills gap.

You already fit the bill for a career in licensed hospitality. You've already proved in practice that you are a 'people person', well organised and skilled in the operational side of the business. With this course you'll now be able to take the next step up in learning more about the key business fundamentals and be able to add to your suite of formal qualifications that recognises your professionalism in this trade.

Progression 

Advanced Diploma in Licensed Hospitality.

Entry Requirements 

For managers, supervisors and owners of hospitality and tourism businesses.

Duration 

Two days per unit

Open book test and a short answer examination paper per unit.

The Profitable Business Portfolio (PBP) is designed to give managers and supervisors the skills to effectively manage their business through a combination of training and self-study, resulting in a nationally recognised qualification to advanced level.

The core units of the PBP provide understanding of three key areas not addressed in working life and these are:

  • understanding your market
  • motivating your team.

When can I study? 

Thursdays and Fridays, 9.00am - 5.00pm

Duke of Cornwall Hotel

The Duke of Cornwall hotel is a major Plymouth landmark; this historic hotel has been welcoming guests through its doors since 1863. The hotel prides itself on delivering exceptionally high levels of customer service and has been able to achieve this through its close working relationship with the College.

College sets-up exam results helpline

Exam results time is never easy, which is why City College Plymouth has set-up a helpline for people who didn’t receive the grades they wanted or are still unsure of what they want to do.

Impartial advice and guidance will be available from the College’s Student Services team on 01752 305803 from 8.30am to 5.00pm on weekdays.

Catering Students Cook up a Feast of Medals

Students at City College Plymouth have been celebrating their recent medal success at the Major International Culinary Challenge – winning three gold, eight silver and eight bronze medals and four certificates of merit.

The Major Culinary Challenge and Mini Series of Display Classes are organised each year by Major International in association with the Craft Guild of Chefs and are open to chefs of varying skill level from any type of foodservice operation.

Cocktail course can mix it with the best of them

City College Plymouth and Plymouth Gin have been awarded the Professional Association for Catering Education (PACE) Innovation with Industry Award, for their Professional Bartending (Cocktails) course – the UK’s first bartending qualification.

The City & Guilds Level 2 qualification in Professional Bartending has been written by City College Plymouth in conjunction with Plymouth Gin and bar consultant Sebastian Hamilton-Mudge.
