What's it all about? 

Painting and decorating not only makes properties more attractive but also protects walls and other surfaces against exposure to the elements. On our course you will learn all aspects of safety (because you will often be working at height), how to deal with hazardous wastes, the value of surface preparation, which paints and paint finishes to use, and which tools and techniques are appropriate. At the end of the course, you'll be confident and competent to tackle any minor jobs in the profession.

Progression 

Successful completion of this course will enhance your employment opportunities and enable you to progress to a level 2 construction course at the College.

Entry Requirements 

There are no specific entry requirements, however you must show a willingness to engage and a genuine interest in the course that will enable you to progress into employment or further education.

Duration 

One year

Are there any exams? 

You will be assessed by practical projects, knowledge assignments and questions. The combination of assessment methods will depend on units of study. There is an external end test on completion of all units.

What does the course involve? 

The main subjects covered are:

  • storing materials and equipment
  • preparing the work area for operations
  • preparing surfaces for decorating
  • applying paint materials by brush and roller
  • applying wallpaper.

Level Two

What's it all about? 

You've already learned the first steps in painting and decorating and have had plenty of practice. Now, because you might be soon employed on larger commercial developments or on smaller-scale domestic properties, we aim to introduce you to the planning, organisational and practical skills to complete projects.

Progression 

Successful completion of this course will enhance your employment opportunities and enable you to progress to a level 3 construction course at the College.

Entry Requirements 

In our experience in order to be successful on this course you will need one of the following:

  • four GCSEs at grades D - F (including English and science) and a level 1 diploma
  • an intermediate GNVQ
  • a BTEC first diploma
  • an NVQ Level 1/technical certificate.

Duration 

One year

Are there any exams? 

You will be assessed under simulated working conditions by practical projects, knowledge assignments and questions. There is an external end test and health and safety test on completion of all units.

What's it all about? 

This course will give you the confidence and technique to achieve a first class finishes to any project you undertake. You may find that as your confidence grows you want to move forward to further study, in which case this course will underpin your future learning.

Progression 

Learners can progress on to an Advanced Apprenticeship.

Entry Requirements 

  1. You will need to be employed as an apprentice by a company within Devon and Cornwall
  2. Four GCSEs at grade C - D (including maths and English)
  3. You will need to have an initial assessment at the Work-based Learning Department.

Duration 

Two years

Apprenticeships allow you to invest in your business's future. By taking on an apprentice you can acquire specialist skills for your business that allow you to keep abreast of new technology.

Are there any exams? 

Assessment is continuous, both on and off the job. There are also end of unit tests and an end exam.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

Apprenticeships are for learners employed as an apprentice by a company within Devon and Cornwall. Funding is guaranteed by the Government for the training, with priority being given to learners starting aged 16 to 25 years. We can assist in matching learners to employers.

The course content will include:

  • NVQ Level 2 in Decorative Finishing and Industrial Painting
  • occupations - you can choose from two occupational routes: painter and industrial painter
  • Functional Skills: application of number level 1 and communication level 1 • technical certificate: Painting and Decorating Diploma Level 2 • additional requirements: health and safety test, Employment Responsibilities and Rights (ERR) programme of study.

When can I study? 

Two days per week in the first year, then one day a week

What's it all about? 

Whether you are used to re-decorating houses or applying heavy-duty finishes to huge structures, you will already have had plenty of practice painting and decorating. Now, because you might be soon employed on big commercial developments, or on small-scale domestic jobs, repairs and restoration, we will delve into the planning and organisational side in more detail. You will become confident using more complex, decorative and specialist finishes too.

Progression 

Successful completion will greatly enhance employment opportunities and progression.

Entry Requirements 

Entry on completion of NVQ 2 and by an initial assessment at level to at the Work-based Learning Department.

One year

College sets-up exam results helpline

Exam results time is never easy, which is why City College Plymouth has set-up a helpline for people who didn’t receive the grades they wanted or are still unsure of what they want to do.

Impartial advice and guidance will be available from the College’s Student Services team on 01752 305803 from 8.30am to 5.00pm on weekdays.
