Do you like tinkering with engines and cars? Do you want to learn more about the motor industry and prefer a more hands-on approach to learning? Then our entry level course is ideal for you. The course allows you the you the opportunity to progress to a higher level at the College and achieve your career in the motor vehicle industry.

Level one optional units also allow you the opportunity to progress to a higher level. The diploma also includes Personal and Social Development (PSD) units to meet the requirement for foundation learning.

Progression 

On successful completion you may progress to the level one motorsport course offered at the College.

Entry Requirements 

There are no specific entry requirements, however good communication and people skills are an advantage.

You will be assessed by a variety of practical tasks and assessments, and online and paper exams.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

The course involves you studying both the theory and practical aspects of the following:

  • introduction to motor vehicle workshop safety, the maintenance and repair industry and workshop tools and equipment
  • introduction to engine components and operation, steering and suspension, cooling and lubrication systems, braking systems, wheels and tyres
  • introduction to fuel, transmission and ignition systems.

You will also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace, and other skills associated with working on motor vehicles.

The course also includes:

  • NOCN induction award
  • one functional skill to entry level 3.

Course Overview

Level 

Level Two

What's it all about? 

This is a great progression route from the level 1 course. It is a valued qualification that may help lead to employment, upon where the NVQ element can then be completed for whose wishing to become qualified technicians.This level two qualification covers the technical needs for today's motor vehicle repair industry, including the diagnosis of non-complex system faults. It provides essential knowledge for service technicians working on light vehicles (cars and vans) in all types of garages, dealerships and maintenance depots.

Progression 

On successful completion you may progress to:

  • any level 3 engineering course offered at the College
  • an Apprenticeship
  • enter directly into employment.

Entry Requirements 

In our experience in order to be successful on this level of course you will need one of the following:

  • four GCSEs at grades D-F (including grade Ds in English, maths and science, or a level 1 diploma at merit grade)
  • a BTEC foundation diploma in a related subject
  • an NVQ level 1/technical certificate in a related subject
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

This course involves studying both the theory and practical aspects of the following:

  • carrying out routine vehicle maintenance
  • removing and replacing engine units and components
  • electrical auxiliary units and components
  • chassis units and components.

You will gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.

The course also includes:

  • NOCN induction award
  • NOCN level one in progression award/certificate
  • one functional skill to level one

When can I study? 

9.00am to 4.30pm, three days a week

Motorsport (Vehicle Maintenance and Repair)

What's it all about? 

This is an exciting course which encompasses general vehicle maintenance and repair procedures with motor sport applications. Giving you a good insight into the industry, the course provides essential knowledge for the specialist group of competition maintenance and repair technicians.This level one qualification covers the basic technical needs of today's motor vehicle industry.

Progression 

On successful completion you may progress to the level 2 qualification offered at the College, or enter directly into employment.

Entry Requirements 

There are no specific entry requirements, however you must show a willingness to engage and a genuine interest in the course that will enable you to progress into employment or further education.

Duration 

One year

Business Benefits 

Students have an insight into the industry, gaining a vehicle maintenance and welding qualification.

Are there any exams? 

You will be assessed through a variety of practical tasks and assessments, and online and paper exams.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

You will study the following units:

  • motorsport vehicle construction and routine maintenance
  • operating principles of motorsport vehicle engines, tyres, brakes, steering and suspension systems
  • operating principles and maintenance of motorsport vehicle transmission systems and electrical and electronic systems.

You will also work towards a City & Guilds 3268 Introductory Welding Certificate, gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace, and other skills associated with working on competition vehicles.

The course also includes:

  • NOCN induction award
  • NOCN level one award in progression
  • one functional skill to level one
  • City & Guilds 3268 Introductory Welding Certificate.

When can I study? 

9.00am to 4.30pm, three days per week

College Celebrates Students’ Success

Staff and students at City College Plymouth are celebrating today after the City’s league tables showed that the College was ranked fourth* out of the fifteen non-selective schools and colleges in the City. The College’s average points score per exam entry is 208.7.

College sets-up exam results helpline

Exam results time is never easy, which is why City College Plymouth has set-up a helpline for people who didn’t receive the grades they wanted or are still unsure of what they want to do.

Impartial advice and guidance will be available from the College’s Student Services team on 01752 305803 from 8.30am to 5.00pm on weekdays.

In your first job, you will want to prove that you have the practical craftsmanship and technical know-how to make a great career in the industry. Our apprenticeship course will teach you how to maintain and repair vehicles of all types and decide on best repair techniques. You will be a competent, capable craftsmanship and make a valuable contribution to the business.

Progression 

Students can progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship.

Entry Requirements 

Entry is via an initial assessment at the Work-based Learning Department, and a vocational assessment undertaken at City College Plymouth.

Duration 

Two years

The programme involves continuous assessment of practical skills both on and off the job.

Apprenticeships are for learners employed as an Apprentice by a local company. Funding is guaranteed by the Government for the training, with priority being given to learners starting age 16 - 18 years.
We can assist with matching learners to employers.
The course contents will include:-

NVQ: vehicle maintenance and repair level 2
routes available light vehicle, heavy vehicle and auto-electrical
(heavy vehicle and auto electrical - block release)

Functional Skills: application of number level 1

Our advanced apprenticeship course will teach you all aspects of vehicle body maintenance and crash repair or panel beating. You'll be able to demonstrate to an employer your competent, capable craftsmanship to make you a valuable asset to their business. We'll match you to the most appropriate employer too, so you will thrive in the business.

Progression 

Successful completion will greatly enhance job opportunities.

Entry Requirements 

Entry is normally after successful completion of the Level 2 programme, but in some circumstances direct entry is accepted.

Duration 

Four years
