Course Overview

What's it all about? 

Sociology is the study of society and this course looks at a wide range of social topics. It gives an thorough understanding of how society tackles its needs, for example to provide education and of different ways in which this could be done, and enables us to question how society is organised. society today.

Progression 

You can progress to level 3 courses offered at the College, for example A levels.

Entry Requirements 

This is an intensive one year course.  You will be considered on an individual basis.  In all cases numeracy and literacy assessments will be undertaken as part of the application process.

Duration 

One year

Are there any exams? 

You will be assessed via a mixture of in-class activities, practical work, portfolio, coursework and exams.

What does the course involve? 

Topics studied include:

  • what is sociology?
  • family, education, social differentiation, poverty and the welfare state
  • the sociology of power and politics
  • the sociology of work
  • migration and movement
  • social control and deviance.

Psychology

What's it all about? 

Psychology is a fascinating subject and studies the science of the mind. It offers you the chance to find out more about our thought processes and how they translate into actions.

New for 2010, this GCSE will help you gain an understanding and be able to investigate the mind and behaviour.

Progression 

You can progress onto other level 3 courses, such as A levels, offered at the College.

This is an intensive one year course.  You will be considered on an individual basis.  In all cases numeracy and literacy assessments will be undertaken as part of the application process.

What does the course involve? 

This course helps you:

  • understand the interdependence of individuals, groups, institutions and entire societies
  • analyse the nature and source of psychological theories
  • understand social, developmental and cognitive psychological approaches
  • learn about different research methods and how to present your findings

GCSE Full-time Programme

Course Overview

What's it all about? 

This course is an intense one year, full-time programme comprising of GCSEs and tutorial support. You will study five GCSEs from the following subjects; maths, English, science, psychology, a language, social science, history and geography. These options cover the English Baccalaureate requirements.

The programme will give you a broad range of qualifications, good foundations for further academic study and an opportunity to update previous qualifications and improve your grades.

Progression 

You can progress onto a variety of level 3 courses at the College, such as A levels or a BTEC qualification.

Entry Requirements 

All applications will be considered on an individual basis. In all cases, numeracy and literacy assessments will be undertaken as part of the application process.

If you have sat GCSEs in English and maths in the last two years, you will be expected to have gained a grade D in order to achieve a grade C or above on this course.

Duration 

One year

Are there any exams? 

You will be required to attend all your classes in order to receive the ncessary tuition. In addition to your specialist (GCSE) subjects, you will be taught valuable study skills which will make it easier for you to study successfully.  The support you receive through your tutorial programme will also be aimed at improving your chances of success as well as improving your self confidence and inter-personal skills. Assessment is via a mixture of in-class activities, practical work, portfolio, coursework and exams.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

  • Academic development - develop and improve own learning, research skills and ICT skills.
  • English - language skills, fiction, non-fiction, Shakespeare and prose.
  • Maths - basic arithmetic, graphs, geometry, alegbra, trigonometry and statistics.
  • Science - biology, chemistry and physics.

You can choose at least one of the following:

  • sociology - study of human behaviour in society today.
  • psychology - understanding and investigating the mind and behaviour.

English

Course Overview

What's it all about? 

An essential qualification for employment and progression into further education and higher education.  You will study a Shakespeare play, a John Steinbeck novel and a variety of non-fiction texts, poetry from other cultures and traditions and media texts.  Oral assessments are embedded in the course.

Progression 

Successful completion can lead to progression to advanced level English, subject to grades. Whether or not students continue studying English, the single award is a recognised and essential qualification.

Entry Requirements 

You will be required to undertake literacy assessment and achieve a minimum level 1 to gain entry to the course.

Duration 

One year

Are there any exams? 

40% of the available marks come from coursework, four written and three oral, and 60% come from two final exams.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

Single award English involves studying some literature and texts from other cultures and some personal writing. Texts studied range from the 16th Century to the present day.

Science

What's it all about? 

When you hear the word science, what image immediately springs to mind? Rows of bubbling test tubes, strange smells, white coats and unintelligible scribblings? Good, because experimenting is what science is all about. Pushing back the boundaries of what you know to discover what you don't know. Science makes a positive impact on people's lives and as a scientist you'll use your expertise to find real solutions to some very difficult problems.

Progression 

Suitable for entry to A levels or BTEC qualifications or to support an application to teaching.

Entry Requirements 

This is an intensive one year course, therefore if you are re-sitting this qualification within three years you must have obtained a minimum Grade D on completion. Mature applicants will be considered on an individual basis.  In all cases numeracy and literacy assessments will be undertaken as part of the application process.

Duration 

30 weeks

Are there any exams? 

The course is assessed by externally assessed multiple choice tiered tests and structured exams and internally assessed coursework. In order to be successful you will need to carry out independent study activities in the form of additional research and assessments outside of the scheduled class activities.

What does the course involve? 

The course studies various aspects of biology, chemistry and physics.

Mathematics (Maths)

What's it all about? 

The course aims to develop your knowledge and skills in mathematics. It will help you understand mathematical principles and apply them to everyday situations and to other subjects.This course is for those who feel ready to study in a more adult environment and have the self discipline and enthusiasm for their chosen subjects.

Progression 

Successful completion can lead to progression to AS and A2 or higher levels of education. It is also essential for entry into some vocational occupations.

You will be assessed on the completion of coursework in March and by final written examinations in June

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

The course will include:

  • basic arithmetic - fractions, ratios and percentages in everyday life
  • measurements - metric units applied in distance, area, volume and weight
  • graphs - practical applications and algebraic forms
  • geometry - calculation of angles in plane figures
  • algebra - solution of problems using symbols and formulae
  • trigonometry - application in triangular form
  • statistics - calculations and presentation using charts and graphs.

Various days and times or one evening per week

College Celebrates Students’ Success

Staff and students at City College Plymouth are celebrating today after the City’s league tables showed that the College was ranked fourth* out of the fifteen non-selective schools and colleges in the City. The College’s average points score per exam entry is 208.7.

College sets-up exam results helpline

Exam results time is never easy, which is why City College Plymouth has set-up a helpline for people who didn’t receive the grades they wanted or are still unsure of what they want to do.

Impartial advice and guidance will be available from the College’s Student Services team on 01752 305803 from 8.30am to 5.00pm on weekdays.
