What's it all about? 

Do you have a passion for and a commitment to public service and its improvement?This course offers you the chance to broaden your knowledge and fine tune your skills to strive for a top career in the public sector, whether you want to work in the police force, local government or join the armed forces. Our foundation degree provides an understanding of the role and practice of the public services in the world today.

Progression 

On successful completion you may be eligible to progress to:

  • the one-year top-up BSc (Hons) Public Services degree at the Plymouth University
  • employment in one of the public services, particularly with the police force.

Entry Requirements 

We welcome applications from those who have a minimum of four GCSEs at grade C or above including maths and science, and one of the following:

  • 120 UCAS tariff points
  • a BTEC national award in a related subject
  • a 14-19 advanced diploma
  • an advanced Apprenticeship
  • an NVQ level 3 in a related subject
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

Duration 

Two years

Are there any exams? 

The course is assessed on a continuous basis through a range of assessment criteria including presentations, essays and in-class tasks.

BTEC Subsidiary/Extended Diploma

What's it all about? 

This course is suitable for those whose career interests are in the public services or for those who are interested in progressing onto higher education. It involves a variety of both physical and academic units which are extremely challenging but also enjoyable and interesting, and most importantly, enables you to gain an insight into the work of the public services. The course is underpinned by a programme of sport and fitness training including Dartmoor expeditions, camping, rock-climbing and abseiling, all of which are approached with a view to developing leadership skills. Students intending to take this course must be prepared to adhere to a full timetable of work and practical assessments.

Progression 

On successful completion you may progress to:

  • a foundation degree course offered at the College
  • an honours degree course at a range of universities
  • employment in the Armed Forces, the leisure industry or in other areas pending the application to a public service eg police, fire and rescue etc.

Entry Requirements 

In order to gain entry onto the BTEC Subsidiary/Extended Diploma in Public Services you must be successful during an interview and have one of the following:

  • four GCSEs A-C grade including English and maths at grade C or above  
  • BTEC first diploma at merit level
  • intermediate GNVQ
  • NVQ level 2/technical certificate
  • successful completion of an Apprenticeship course
  • relevant work experience.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

The course is broken down into two separate qualifications, you will study the following units:

Subsidiary diploma

  • Government, policies and the public services.
  • Leadership and teamwork in the public services.
  • Physical preparation, health and lifestyle for the public services.
  • Citizenship, diversity and the public services.
  • Outdoor and adventurous expeditions.
  • Crime and its effects on society.

You must successfully complete all subsidiary diploma units to be invited to progress onto the extended diploma.

 

Extended diploma

  • Understanding discipline in the uniformed public services.
  • Planning and management of major incidents.
  • Skills for water-based outdoor and adventurous activities.
  • Understanding the impact of war, conflict and terrorism on public services.
  • Behaviour in public sector employment.
  • Skills for land-based outdoor and adventurous activities.
  • Aspects of the legal system and law making process.
  • Employment in the uniformed public services.
  • Police powers in the public services.
  • Custodial care services.
  • Fitness testing and training for the uniformed public services.
  • Volunteering in public services.
  • Career planning for the public services.

What's it all about? 

Do you want a career in the armed forces or emergency services? If so, this course offers you the opportunity to develop the skills you need to help you achieve your career goals. During the course there will be an introduction to each of the public services, their roles and selection procedures. This will include an appropriate number of visits and visiting speakers which will enable you to work closely with both the armed forces and emergency services. The whole course is underpinned by a programme of sport and fitness training including Dartmoor expeditions, camping, rock-climbing and abseiling, and is delivered by serving and ex-public service employees.

Progression 

On successful completion you may progress to:

  • employment in the armed forces, the leisure industry or in other areas pending the application to a public service eg police, fire and rescue etc
  • a level 2 course offered at the College.

Entry Requirements 

There are no specific entry requirements, however you must show a willingness to engage and a genuine interest in the course that will enable you to progress into employment or further education.

Duration 

One year

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

The course includes the following study areas:

  • introduction to expedition skills
  • public service incidents
  • personal skills for the public services
  • improving health and fitness for entry into the uniformed public service

  • planning and participating in an event
  • practical teamwork in the public service

  • forensic detection
  • self-management skills

Extra curricular activities include:

  • Poland – each year the programme team take a party of students to various places of historical interest

  • Army - look at ‘army life’ and visit the Royal Marine Commando Training Centre at Lympstone.

Public Service Students Take Part in Major Incident Exercise

Public service students at City College Plymouth became managers of a mock disaster for a day.

Second year students enjoyed the ‘table top exercise’ in the College’s sports hall, as part of their Planning for and Management of Major Incidents unit of the programme.

The mock incident – dubbed ‘Operation Fallen Angel’ – was designed to imitate the scene of a major air crash. The students took on the roles of bronze commanders’ and were expected to manage the scene.

College Celebrates Students’ Success

Staff and students at City College Plymouth are celebrating today after the City’s league tables showed that the College was ranked fourth* out of the fifteen non-selective schools and colleges in the City. The College’s average points score per exam entry is 208.7.

Course Overview

What's it all about? 

This module will provide public service practitioners with the personal and entrepreneurial skills to develop, implement, manage and evaluate a community related project. The module includes an examination of the business planning process as a means of influencing stakeholders, capture funding and resources necessary to develop a successful project.

Progression 

On successful completion of this module you will receive 20 credits, which can use towards other university programmes.

Entry Requirements 

There are no specific entry requirements for this course, however it is aimed at those who are currently employed within public services and the third sector to develop their personal and entrepreneurial skills.

Duration 

Five days

The aim of this module is to assist public service practitioners to develop the personal and entrepreneurial skills necessary for successful management of a community related project.

Upon completion of the module, you should be able to demonstrate how reflective practice develops personal and work related skills as well as evaluate how business plans and management strategies contribute to the success of a community project.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

Social entrepreneurship was initially proposed by a senior police officer as a knowledge and skills-based programme, targeted at the development of community initiatives. Through a combination of didactic, reflective and experiential learning this module seeks to equip learners with entrepreneurial skills.

The topics that are covered over the five day course include:

  • reflective practice interpersonal, work related, research, and communication skills
  • problem solving (SWOT) networking; flexibility; creativity
  • ‘Operation Talents’
  • decision making, planning, fundraising, project management, team working, leadership
  • sponsorship and working with the private sector
  • marketing (decision makers and customers), business plans strategies, customer base/focus, branding, launching the venture, sustainability, producing prototypes or test marketing
  • effective bid writing
  • monitoring, evaluation, budget control, further project development.

You will study the social entrepreneurship module as a stand alone degree level short course. The stand alone module runs up to four times within the academic year.

This module in Social Entrepreneurship responds to both employer and individual professional development requirements.  In addition, it meets with City College Plymouth College's strategy to engage with businesses and other organisations at a Higher Education level and to provide delivery modes that are demand sensitive.

Want to know what it’s like in the police force? Or how you go about getting a job as a fireman? Or what careers might suit you in the civil service? On our course you will be given a working insight into each of the major aspects of public services life and a chance to look behind the scenes before you decide on your chosen career. The course aims to provide an environment in which the potential public service employee can mature and develop attitudes and an approach to life appropriate for the career of his/her choice. Additionally, there will be an introduction to each of the public services, their roles and selection procedures. This will include an appropriate number of visits and visiting speakers which will enable you to work closely with both the armed forces and emergency services. The whole course is underpinned by a rigorous programme of sport and fitness training including, Dartmoor expeditions, camping, rock-climbing and abseiling.

Progression 

On successful completion you may progress to:

  • employment in the armed forces, the leisure industry or in other areas pending the application to a public service eg police, fire and rescue etc
  • a level 3 course offered at the College.

Entry Requirements 

In order to gain entry onto the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Public Services you must be successful during an interview and have one of the following:

  • Four GCSEs D-F grade including English and maths
  • BTEC first certificate/introductory diploma at merit level
  • relevant work experience
  • NVQ level 1/technical certificate in a related subject
  • equivalent qualifications.

What's it all about? 

The certificate of achievement in Neighbourhood Management has been collaboratively designed to meet local needs and current government initiatives regarding community relations, crime reduction and citizenship. The course consists of three 20 credit modules at HE level.

Neighbourhood Management

What's it all about? 

Do people seek you out to help them solve disputes? Are you persuasive? Are you concerned about improving your local environment? Join our collaboratively designed course and you will exercise your talents as you get to grips with partnerships dealing with such issues as litter, crime, antisocial-behaviour, poor health and lack of work opportunities. We will teach you to be effective in bringing residents, community groups and providers together to make better neighbourhoods.

Progression 

Successful students can progress onto the Public Services Foundation Degree at the College.

Entry Requirements 

In our experience in order to be successful on this level of course you will need one of the following:

  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.
  • 60-120 UCAS tariff points
  • a BTEC national award in a related subject
  • an NVQ Level 3 in a related subject
  • or a willingness to study at university level and develop personal skills.

Duration

The course is collaboratively designed to meet local needs and current Government initiatives regarding community relations, crime reduction and citizenship.

The course consists of six 20 credit modules at higher education level 1 (this is equivalent to the level of the first year of an honours degree).

Employers involved in the design of the course include:

  • Devon and Cornwall Constabulary
  • Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Services
  • Plymouth City Council housing department
  • Local community groups such as the Devonport Regeneration Group.

Are there any exams? 

The workshops will include lectures, seminars and guest speakers. You will be expected to play an active part in all sessions, for example student presentations will be an important aspect of assessment. Discussion, debate and lively interaction with fellow students will be encouraged and will form the ethos for the course thus encouraging collaboration and group work. Assessment and content have been carefully thought through to provide a range of interactive, collaborative and independent activities.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

The course includes:

  • partnerships in practice - examining the role of statutory, non-statutory and voluntary agencies who work in partnership with the public at a local level to improve community safety
  • community relations - looking at the concept of the community and the skills needed to communicate with and understand the needs of a diverse range of people
  • communication and diversity at work
  • performance management
  • crime and society.

You will learn the communication skills needed to co-ordinate and manage people, and guide their efforts towards common goals and objectives. Development of personal development planning is also taught on this course.
