What's it all about? 

If you are an active person with interests in sport, exercise and fitness, then this course will get you started in this exciting and ever changing industry.  You will take part in various sporting and fitness sessions and we will develop your skills in leadership and coaching, planning and communications, giving you the confidence to pursue this as a career.

So if your looking for a career in the sports industry, or hope to progress on to university, you will benefit from the range of subjects studied and additional qualifications on offer. 

Progression 

On successful completion you may progress to:

  • higher education courses such as a foundation degree in sports massage or strength and conditioning at the College
  • any sport, exercise and fitness related degree at university level
  • additional industry related qualifications
  • enter into employment.

 

Entry Requirements 

In our experience in order to be successful on this course you will need one of the following:

  • four GCSEs A to C grade including English and maths, preferably with physical education and science
  • BTEC first diploma at merit level, with a satisfactory reference regarding attendance, attitude and potential for development 
  • successful completion of the BTEC level 3 subsidiary diploma in sport
  • an NVQ level 2/technical certificate
  • successful completion of an Apprenticeship course
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

*Those hoping to do AS Level Sports Studies will require five GCSEs.

Are there any exams? 

The styles of assessment are varied and promote coursework based assignments rather than exams.  The range of methods used includes written assignments, presentations, practical tests, portfolio evidence and observations/witness statements. 

Assignments are graded and awarded either a pass, merit or distinction grade. These grades are calculated at the end of the year where an overall mark and grade is subsequently awarded. 

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

The course is broken down into two separate qualifications - the subsidiary diploma and the extended diploma. Successful completion of the subsidiary diploma (year one) will enable you to
progress to the extended diploma (year two).
 
Subsidiary diploma units include:

  • principles of anatomy and physiology in sport
  • the physiology of fitness
  • assessing risk in sport
  • fitness training and programming
  • sports development
  • fitness testing for sport or exercise
  • practical team sports/leadership in sport.

Extended diploma units include:

  • sports nutrition
  • practical individual games
  • instructing physical activity and exercise
  • sport coaching/sport massage outdoor and adventurous activities.

During the course you will be given the opportunity to study additional qualifications including:

  • 'Sports Leaders Uk' awards including Higher Sports Leader Award
  • 'CYQ' Level 1 and 2 awards in Instructing Exercise and Fitness

Sports Therapy

What's it all about? 

Are you patient and sympathetic to people? Are you able to work under pressure? Do you have an optimistic approach to life? You will use these skills to treat injured sportsmen and women of all ages and levels of sporting ability, both amateur and professional. Our foundation degree, accredited by the Society of Sports Therapists, will give you detailed knowledge of injury prevention, assessing injuries, and introduce you to the rehabilitation of various sporting injuries.

Progression 

On successful completion you may progress to:

  • the one year BSc (Hons) Health and Fitness top-up degree at Plymouth University
  • the final year of the BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy degree or BSc (Hons) Fitness and Coaching degree at the University College of St Mark & St John
  • the second or final year of health and fitness degrees at a range of universities
  • a wide range of careers in the health, fitness and sports therapy industries.

 

Entry Requirements 

We welcome applications from those who have a minimum of four GCSEs at grade C or above including English and maths, and one of the following:

  • 160 UCAS tariff points to include relevant science subject
  • a BTEC national award in a related subject
  • a 14-19 advanced diploma
  • an advanced Apprenticeship
  • an NVQ level 3 in a related subject
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

Duration 

Two years

Modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework including practicals, examinations and end-module tests.

Make your mark in this highly competitive industry and work to develop athletes so they can achieve elite sport performances. Our foundation degree helps you build impressive knowledge of the latest techniques and training, contemporary conditioning issues, laboratory-based physiological testing and sports nutritional strategies for you to put into working practice. You will also learn about Olympic weight lifting techniques and appreciate the holistic view of improving sporting performance.

On successful completion you may progress to:

  • the one year BSc (Hons) Health and Fitness top-up degree at Plymouth University
  • the final year of the BSc (Hons) Strength, Conditioning and Coaching degree at the University College of St Mark & St John (subject to approval)

What's it all about? 

Sport is a diverse and dynamic industry, and with exercise and fitness high on the national agenda, and the impending Olympics on the world stage at the moment, there has never been a better time to get involved in these exciting careers.

This course contains both written and practical elements. The course introduces you to the exciting world of the sport and leisure industry and provides you with a great opportunity to progress to a more advanced sports course.

So if you have an ambition and drive to be a sports leader/coach, gym instructor, personal trainer, or want to learn more to improve your own sports performance then complete an application form or contact us for more information.

You will need personal qualities required for working in the sports industry and also enthusiasm for sport and fitness activities. 

Progression 

On successful completion you may progress to:

  • the level 3 course in sport at the College
  • employment within the sports industry.

 

Entry Requirements

  • four GCSEs at grades D-F (including D in English)
  • a BTEC first certificate/introductory diploma at merit level
  • an NVQ level 1/technical certificate in a related subject
  • successful completion of the PLP/Prince's Trust programme
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

Duration 

One year

Are there any exams? 

The course is assessed on a continuous basis with written coursework and practical assessments.

 

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

The course is split into six units - two compulsory core units and four specialist units:

  • body in sport
  • sport leadership
  • practical sport
  • instructing exercise and fitness
  • health safety and injury
  • planning and leading sporting activities

Additional qualifications you can achieve include:

  • CYQ - Introductory Certificate in Exercise and Fitness Instructing
  • English Sports Trust -Junior Sports Leadership Award
  • FA – Level One Coaching Award
  • OCN - Nutrition Awards.

Sport Students Victorious at College Dodgeball Tournament

Second year sports students at City College Plymouth are celebrated their title win at the College’s third annual dodgeball tournament.

The tournament saw both male and female students from across the College battle it out for the coveted title, which involved following the five rules of dodgeball…. dodge, duck, dip, dive and…….. dodge!

College Celebrates Students’ Success

Staff and students at City College Plymouth are celebrating today after the City’s league tables showed that the College was ranked fourth* out of the fifteen non-selective schools and colleges in the City. The College’s average points score per exam entry is 208.7.

It will give you a comprehensive overview of the sport and leisure industry and put you on the right track to becoming employable. Whatever sport you are interested in and whatever level you have achieved there will be a career opportunity for you.

Progression 

Successful completion of this award and a reference from your tutor will enable you to progress onto the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport or seek employment within the sports industry.

Entry Requirements 

There are no specific entry requirements, however you must show a willingness to engage and a genuine interest in the course that will enable you to progress into employment or further education.

Eight units are covered throughout the award, they include:

  • working in sport and leisure
  • the healthy body
  • issues in sport and leisure

  • sport and leisure events

There is also the opportunity to take additional qualifications such as:

  • functional skills
  • NCFE in Sport and Exercise Studies
  • National Open College Network Awards in Indoor Team Games and Participating in Leisure Activities.

College visited by CEO of Sports Leaders UK

Sport students at City College Plymouth were visited by the Chief Executive Officer of Sports Leaders UK, Linda Plowright, to see the organisation’s sport programmes in action.

Ms Plowright witnessed a sports leadership session led by the students, who are undertaking their Community Sports Leaders Award as part of a BTEC National Diploma in Sport. She later attended a higher sports leader theory session.

College hosts fundraiser for former sport student Ben

City College Plymouth is hosting a fundraising event for former National Sport Diploma student, Ben Clark who tragically broke his neck in a freak accident, leaving him paralysed from the waist down.

Both students and staff at the College’s Sport department will be taking part in an ‘International Sprint Distance Triathlon’ - consisting of a 750m swim, 20 km bike ride and 5 km run, with each student choosing a discipline.

Downderry Student Wins FESCO Sports Personality of the Year Award

 

Jay Williamson from Downderry will be presented with an award at City College Plymouth’s Awards Ceremony on Tuesday 23 November, an annual ceremony about giving recognition to, and celebrating the success of its students.

 

Jay, 17 collected his Award for FESCO Sports Personality of the Year Award, sponsored by Fitness for Sport, whilst undertaking the first year of his Sport National Diploma.
