What's it all about? 

Travel and tourism is one of the world’s fastest growing industries and this course can help you develop the skills needed to become part of this exciting world. The course includes lots of practical areas of study such as customer service, the role of air cabin crew and the role of the overseas representative.  There are several visits to assist with the completion of coursework and these include places such as Paignton Zoo, Woodlands and tourist attractions in London. There are also optional visits to either New York or a European destination.

Progression 

This qualification gives you an excellent opportunity to develop a career in the travel and tourism industry or to progress on to the level 2 travel and tourism course offered at the College.

Entry Requirements 

There are no entry requirements. However, you must show a willingness to engage and a genuine interest in the course, that will enable you to progress into employment or further education.

Duration 

One year

Are there any exams? 

Assessment includes a series of coursework assignment activities for each unit. The work may include individual or group written reports, individually completed worksheets, oral presentations, group or individual projects and facility visit reports.

Level Two

What's it all about? 

If you are excited about the challenge of the holiday experience for tomorrow's tourists then our course will give you a solid foundation of knowledge to support your career ambitions. We will teach you skills that are current, relevant and topical. You can use our course as a springboard to more advanced work-related qualifications or you might just decide to continue your training in your choice of work.

Progression 

On successfu completion you may progress to:

  • the level 3 course in travel and tourism at the College (subject to grades)
  • a career in the travel and tourism industry.

Entry Requirements 

In our experience in order to be successful on this level of course you will need one of the following:

  • four GCSEs at grades D-F (including English and maths)
  • a BTEC foundation diploma in a related subject
  • an NVQ level 1/technical certificate in a related subject
  • successful completion of the PLP/Prince's Trust programme
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

Duration 

One year

Assessment comprises a series of coursework assignment activities for each unit. The work may include individual or group written reports, individually completed worksheets, oral presentations, group or individual projects and facility visit reports.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

The core units to be studied are:

  • the UK travel and tourism sector
  • understanding customer service in travel and tourism
  • understanding the nature and effects of world travel.

In addition to the core units, eight specialist units are studied including, European holiday destinations, interpersonal skills for holiday reps, exploring airports and airlines, and UK travel agency operations.

Additional qualifications you will study include City & Guilds Travel Destinations and the NCFE Award in Resort Representatives.

The course also includes a residential visit to London and optional visits to destinations such as Paris or New York. There are also study visits to local attractions such as Woodlands and Paignton Zoo.

Staff and students at City College Plymouth are celebrating today after the City’s league tables showed that the College was ranked fourth* out of the fifteen non-selective schools and colleges in the City. The College’s average points score per exam entry is 208.7.

What's it all about? 

A career in travel and tourism can be an exciting and stimulating challenge. Our work-related course means you get opportunities to develop your skills in dealing with realistic situations, activities and demands, right from the start. There is even a life-sized mock aircraft to assist with the completion of the cabin crew qualification! When you successfully complete the course, you will be awarded with not one, but the equivalent of three A levels! You can then choose whether to continue your training in your choice of work sphere or progress to more advanced work related qualifications.

Progression 

On successful completion you may progress to:

  • a foundation degree in hospitality and tourism management, or business at the College
  • a BA (Hons) degree at a range of universities
  • a wide range of careers within the travel and tourism industry.

Entry Requirements 

In our experience in order to be successful on this course you will need one of the following:

  • four to five GCSEs at grades A*-C (including English and maths)
  • an intermediate GNVQ
  • a BTEC first diploma
  • an NVQ level 2/technical certificate
  • successful completion of an Apprenticeship course
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

Duration 

Two years

Are there any exams? 

All units are internally assessed. Set in a vocational context with a wide range of practical as well as written assessment.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

The course covers the following subjects:
• customer service
• marketing and the business of tourism
• the work of holiday representatives, travel agents, conference organisers and children’s representatives.

The course includes additional qualifications such as cabin crew and worldwide travel geography. You will have the opportunity to go on a residential visit to London and optional visits to local attractions such as Woodlands and Paignton Zoo. You may undertake work experience in Europe as part of the Leonardo Scheme - previous students have worked in Istanbul and Sweden.

College sets-up exam results helpline

Exam results time is never easy, which is why City College Plymouth has set-up a helpline for people who didn’t receive the grades they wanted or are still unsure of what they want to do.

Impartial advice and guidance will be available from the College’s Student Services team on 01752 305803 from 8.30am to 5.00pm on weekdays.
