What's it all about? 

If you know you want a career in business but are undecided about which route to follow then this foundation degree is the best choice for you. While you decide your final specialism, we can teach you to become flexible, financially astute, adept at communicating with both customers and staff and someone whose talents will be highly sought after in the private, public and voluntary sectors. Depending on your module choice you may take the route to achieve a Foundation Degree in Business, Business (Management) or Business (Marketing).

Progression 

On successful completion you may be eligable to progress to:

  • the final year of the BA (Hons) Business Administration degree at Plymouth University
  • the second year of other business related honours degree programmes at Plymouth University
  • final year business honours degree programmes at a range of universities
  • a wide range of careers in business, management, personnel, marketing, finance, accounting and public administration.

Entry Requirements 

We welcome applications from those who have a minimum of four GCSEs at grade C or above including English and maths, and one or more of the following:

  • 120 UCAS tariff points
  • a BTEC national award in a related subject
  • a 14-19 advanced diploma
  • an advanced Apprenticeship
  • an NVQ level 3 in a related subject
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

Two years

Students who successfully complete this programme will be able to demonstrate a high level of both academic and work related knowledge, and will have developed a range of transferable skills. This will enable them to make an immediate contribution to the workplace.

Are there any exams? 

Modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework and in-class tests.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

The programme includes the following modules:

Year 1

  • Business Finance - key aspects of finance and management accounting for decision making purposes.
  • Business Environment - national and European business environment.
  • English Business Law - an induction to sources, legal personnel and court structures.
  • Organisational Behaviour - considers how organisational behaviour and attitude influences the behaviour of individuals and groups at work.
  • Marketing - the basic principles of marketing and their application in a business context.

Within the first year you can elect to complete either the 'Marketing Research' module or the 'Introduction to Management Planning' module.

Year 2

  • Management Accounting - a critical evaluation of costing information required to aid decision making.
  • Business Strategy - develops the theory and practice of strategic planning and includes an emphasis on the practical application of planning modules.

  • Enterprise and Innovation

You can choose to complete any three of the following modules within your second year:

  • Managing Knowledge and Information
  • Managing Acitivities
  • Customer Relationship Management
  • Marketing Communications
  • Marketing Planning
  • Managing People
