What's it all about? 

The EAL NVQ Level 2 in Business Improvement Techniques is primarily aimed at those who are involved in business improvement within a team, and other people involved in the business at all levels who require a fundamental understanding of business improvement practices.

Progression 

Upon successful completion you may progress to the NVQ Level 3 Business Improvement Techniques at the College.

Entry Requirements 

Ideally, you:

  • should be in employment
  • should be in a position where you work within a team
  • must have basic skills in maths and English.

Up to 12 months

Business Benefits 

NVQs in Business Improvement Techniques, available at levels 2, 3 and 4, are appropriate to all levels within an organisation - from first level to management.  The modules covered are relevant to all types of businesses, and include effective team working, continuous improvement techniques, workplace organisation and problem-solving techniques.

Key business benefits include an overall, sustainable improvement in performance; a direct reduction in operating costs and waste; and improved staff motivation and effectiveness.

Are there any exams? 

You will need to collect a variety of evidence you have produced or worked on such as plans, charts, reports, standard operating procedures or documents produced as part of a work activity, statements, observations and testimonies to build a portfolio. All of this will be under the guidance of an assessor. Once the criteria for each unit have been met, the unit will be signed off as competent.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

There is a choice of two pathways within the qualification and you can chose from either a Process or Quality pathway. To achieve a full EAL Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Business Improvements, you must achieve six units made up of five mandatory units from either the Process Pathway or the Quality Pathway and one or two additional option unit.

Process Pathway

Mandatory units:

  • complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements
  • contributing to effective team working
  • contributing to the application of the workplace organisatioin techniques
  • contributing to the application of continuous improvement techniques (Kaizen)
  • contributing to the development of visual management systems.

Optional units (plus one of the following - may come from the Quality Improvement Pathway):

  • contributing to the analysing and selection of parts for improvement
  • contributing to carrying out lead time analysis
  • carrying out set-up reduction techniques
  • carrying out autonomous maintenance
  • contributing to the application of problem solving techniques
  • carry out flow analysis
  • contributing to the creation of standard operating procedures.

Pathway: Quality Improvement

Mandatory units:

  • complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements
  • contributing to effective team working
  • contributing to the application of Six Sigma methodology to a project
  • contributing to the application of basic statistical analysis.

Optional units (plus two of the following  -one may come from the Process Improvement Pathway):

  • contributing to the application of statistical process control (SPC) procedures
  • carrying out failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA)
  • contributing to the application of measurement systems analysis (MSA)
  • carrying out mistake/error proofing (POKA YOKE).
