What's it all about? 

The EAL NVQ Level 3 in Business Improvement Techniques is primarily aimed at those who are employed as supervisors, team leaders or facilitators, and are responsible for carrying out business improvement activities, or people being prepared to take on staff responsibilities in a business improvement environment.

Progression 

You may wish to progress to the Level 4 Diploma in Business Improvement Techniques at the College.

Entry Requirements 

In our experience in order to be successful on this level of programme you will need one of the following:

  • four to five* GCSEs at Grades A* to C (including English and Maths)
  • an intermediated GNVQ in a related subject
  • a BTEC first diploma in a related subject
  • an NVQ Level 1/ technical certificate in a related subject
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

NVQs in Business Improvement Techniques, available at 2, 3 and 4, are appropriate to all levels within an organisation - from first level to management.  The modules covered are relevant to all types of business, and include effective team working, continuous improvement techniques, workplace organisation and problem-solving techniques.

Are there any exams? 

You will need to collect a variety of evidence you have produced or worked on such as plans, charts, reports, standard operating procedures or documents produced as part of a work activity, statements, observations and testimonies to build a portfolio. All of this will be under the guidance of an assessor. Once the criteria for each unit have been met, the unit will be signed off as competent.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

There is a choice of two pathways within the qualification and candidates can chose from either a Process or Quality pathway. To achieve a full EAL Level 3 NVQ in Business Improvements, candidates must achieve nine units made up of seven mandatory units from either the Process Pathway or Quality Pathway and two additional optional units.

Process Pathway

Mandatory units:

  • complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements
  • leading effective teams.

Optional units:

You must complete all of group A, one of group B and two from group C

Group A

  • Applying workplace organisation techniques
  • Applying continous improvement techniques (Kaizen)
  • Developing visual management systems

Group B

  • Creating flexible production and manpower sytems
  • Carrying out problem solving activities

Group C

  • Creating flexible production and manpower sytems
  • Carrying out problem solving activities
  • Analysing and selecting parts for improvement
  • Applying lead time analysis
  • Carrying out value stream mapping (VSM)
  • Applying set-up reduction techniques
  • Applying total produtive maintenance (TPM)
  • Applying flow process analysis
  • Applying policy deployment (Hoshin, Kanri, Quality operating sytems, Business plan deployment)
  • Applying value management (Value engineering and value analysis)
  • Creating standard operating procedures (SOP)
