What's it all about? 

If you are interested in child development and enjoy a practical approach to learning, take a look at our course. The certificate provides you with the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding about childcare and development, and can provide a progression route onto the level 3 diploma.

Progression 

On successful completion you may wish to progress to a level 3 course through employment in nursery, crèche or playgroup settings at nursery assistant level. Alternatively, you may wish to continue your studies by applying for the level 3 diploma at the College.

Entry Requirements 

You will need either:

  • four GCSEs at grades A*-D (including English at grade D or above )
  • a BTEC Level 1 (at merit grade or above) in a related subject
  • an NVQ level 1/technical certificate (at distinction level) in a related subject
  • successful completion of the Jumpstart programme
  • successful completion of the PLP/Prince's Trust programme
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

In addition to the overall entry requirements for a level 2 course, you should also have some recent experience of working with children in a childcare setting as a volunteer or through work experience. You will need to be in receipt of two references endorsing your career choice - one should come from the supervisor of the childcare setting where you had recent experience.

As with any childcare course nowadays, you will need to undergo a mandatory Criminal Record Bureau check.

Duration 

One year

Are there any exams? 

Assessment of your learning and practical competence will be completed via:
• a selection of mandatory and optional units
• completion of your practical evidence record
• successful professional development profiles.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

The course includes the following modules:

  • introduction to communication in health, social care or children and young people's settings
  • safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
  • paediatric emergency first aid
  • introduction to equality and inclusion in health, social care or children and young people's settings
  • contributing to children and young people's health and safety.

You will spend two days per week at College and a further two days in a work placement including school, nursery and baby room.

There are opportunities throughout the course to undertake further block placement weeks.

If you are aged 16-18, due to Government funding, tuition fees may not be applicable for your course (Please note: this does not apply to foundation degrees or access to higher education courses, and other courses not eligible for public funding).

Please note that fees quoted apply to courses starting in the academic year 2011 / 12 (August 2011 - July 2012). There may be a slight increase in fees for courses starting 2012 / 13.
