What's it all about? 

Do you want to work in the music or sound industries? Our modular course will give you a fascinating insight into the artistic and technical side of music production, sound engineering, and music/sound for film and live events. You’ll be encouraged to explore your creativity in our modern studio complex at dBs Music. You will be coached by tutors who have worked with the biggest names in the business such as Queen, Bjork, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

 

Progression 

On successful completion you may progress to:

  • the BTEC level 3 in Music Technology offered at the College
  • foundation degrees in live sound or audio and music production at the College
  • an honours degree in a related subject
  • employment in the industry.

Entry Requirements 

Typically, you will need four GCSEs at grades D-F (including English and maths) for the level 2 course, four to five GCSEs at grades A*-C (including English and maths) for the level 3 course. However, other qualifications and skills will be considered at interview.

For the Level 1 and 2 introduction course, why not come along to an informal interview to discuss your learning goals? Bringing examples of your previous experiences, or giving us the opportunity to listen to some of your music in the interview would be very useful as well.

Are there any exams? 

The course has continuous assessment, including projects and examinations. Functional skills will also be assessed.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

The course aims to give you an insight into different areas of sound engineering and music technology, from studio production and live sound through to sound and music, to film and television. You will learn how to use start-of-the-art equipment that can be found in today’s audio industries, from microphones and mixing desks through to samplers and software.

The second year involves a more in-depth exploration of equipment, skills and techniques encouraging your own creativity and ways of working.

We offer a range of courses to suit different experiences and situations, from our new and exciting Level 1 and 2 Introduction course, to our flagship BTEC National Diploma Level 3 courses, currently offering the following pathways:-

MUSIC PRODUCTION
This two-year course has a broad base covering all aspects of sound engineering, music technology and music production.
Subjects covered include studio recording, remixing, film sound, live sound, sound for picture, acoustics, tv, theatre and radio. Equipment knowledge will cover everything from microphones and mixing desks through to samplers and software. You will work with many software packages including Logic Studio, Pro Tools, Reason, Ableton Live,

Though we focus on building your technical know how and listening skills you will also be encouraged to develop your own creativity and ways of working.

To fit in with your busy lives we offer several possible attendance patterns. Choose from a compact but intense two days per week, or two evenings and a Saturday for those in full-time work or a more relaxed three days per week.

DJ PRODUCTION

We are looking for artists who want to be cutting-edge electronic music makers or DJs. We want to work alongside creative minds looking to write and produce music to a releasable standard and push the boundaries of modern electronic music production.

From day one of this two-year course you will get your hands on samplers, microphones, synthesisers, signal processors and mixing desks, whilst getting up to speed with critical software packages like Pro Tools, Ableton live, Logic Studio and Native Instruments Reaktor

Our amazing tutors will also develop your personal, business and management skills to give you everything you need to mark your mark on the music industry.

We pride ourselves on our supportive, inspiring and fun learning environment. So whilst we focus on building your technical knowhow and listening skills, you will also be encouraged to develop your own creativity and style.

The Plymouth Institute for Production, Performance & Arts (PIPPA) brings the College’s creative industries courses together with a recognisable brand. It aims to provide the best possible training, with the best range of facilities in the South West. PIPPA houses professional drama and dance studios complete with full light rigging and stage props, music practice suites, media equipment, recording studios and IT suites.
