What's it all about? 

If you are a gas operative, plumber, heating and ventilation engineer or any other individual who undertakes gas work in a domestic situation then our course will give you the confidence and techniques to tackle a gas project with competence. Not only will you learn how gas installations are designed, installed and tested but we also show you how to approach inspection, testing and certification, diagnosis and repair of gas appliance faults to give you a comprehensive knowledge of the subject.

Progression 

Completion of this course may enhance your employment opportunities and enable you to progress to NVQ Level 2 which is the on-site based assessment. From this you can gain Corgi registration.

Entry Requirements 

In our experience in order to be successful on this level of course you will need one of the following:

  • four GCSEs at grades D-F (including English and maths)
  • a BTEC foundation diploma in a related subject
  • an NVQ Level 1 / technical certificate in a related subject
  • successful completion of the Gateway / Newstart course
  • successful completion of the PLP / Prince's Trust course
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

Two years

Business Benefits 

This programme is the underpinning knowledge part of a full NVQ. All candidates must now undertake the technical certificate before going on to undertake a full Gas NVQ. Candidates do not need to be employed in the gas industry at this stage, but would need to be in order to complete the NVQ.

Are there any exams? 

At technical certificate level you will undertake theory test papers only, as set by City & Guilds. These will be sat at the College.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

Areas covered in the technical certificate include:

  • common basic gas processes
  • maintaining safety in natural gas
  • applying core gas safety measures
  • effective working relationships in the gas industry
  • electrical supply
  • install, commission, service and maintain cookers, laundry, central heating, hot water appliances, pipework, meters, warm air and space heaters.
