What's it all about? 

This course is aimed at practising electricians who have not carried out inspection and testing since training or who require update training before progressing to City and Guilds 2391-10. It is also suitable for those persons with limited experience of inspection and testing of electrical installations, such as those entering the industry from other engineering sectors or those working in allied trades.

Progression 

Successful students may progress to the City & Guilds 2391-10 course.

Entry Requirements 

Minimum age 18 years old.

Basic knowledge and understanding of electrical science and principles and experience of electrical installation work.

It is essential that course delegates bring with them a copy of Requirements for Electrical Installations: IET Wiring Regulations 17th Edition (BS 7671:2008 incorporating amendment no 1: 2011) (ISBN 978-1-84919-269-9), the On-Site Guide (BS 7671:2008 17th Edition) (ISBN 978-0-86341-854-9) and IEE Guidance Note 3 (Inspection and Testing) Fifth Edition (ISBN 978-0-86341-857-0).

Are there any exams? 

Assessment consists of approximately two hours practical assessment and a one hour and 40 minutes GOLA online assessment.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

The course covers:

  • fundamentals of initial verification
  • safe working procedures
  • initial inspection
  • test instrument calibration and accuracy
  • test procedures: continuity, insulation, polarity and earth electrode
  • test procedures: earth fault loop impedance, RCD and prospective fault current
  • certification
  • calculations for resistance of copper conductors and temperature correction for earth fault loop impedance values.
