What's it all about? 

If you are not sure which branch of engineering will suit your skills and personality, and don’t want to make a decision too soon, then our course will give you the chance to keep your options open whilst learning at the same time. You’ll cover all the basics in mechanical and marine engineering for the manufacturing sector, which should give you enough of an insight to be able to choose the area that will inspire you.

Progression 

On successful completion you may progress to:

  • any level 3 engineering course offered at the College: subject to achieving a merit profile
  • an Apprenticeship
  • enter directly into employment.

Entry Requirements 

In our experience in order to be successful on this level of course you will need one of the following:

  • four GCSEs at grades C-F (including grade D in English and science, grade C or D in maths or a level 1 diploma at merit grade)
  • a BTEC foundation diploma in a related subject
  • an NVQ Level 1/technical certificate in a related subject
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

Duration 

One year

Are there any exams? 

All units have assignments which are assessed against national grading criteria. There are exams in functional skills.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

The following units will be studied:

  • working safely in the engineering workplace
  • interpreting and using engineering information
  • maths for engineering technicians
  • applied electrical and mechanical science for engineers
  • selecting engineering materials
  • engineering assembly methods and technology
  • using computer aided design techniques in engineering
  • fabrication techniques and sheet metal work
  • casting and moulding engineering components.

There is also a requirement to complete functional skills, progression awards and a welding unit.

If you are aged 16-18, due to Government funding, tuition fees may not be applicable for your course (Please note: this does not apply to foundation degrees or access to higher education courses, and other courses not eligible for public funding).

Please note that fees quoted apply to courses starting in the academic year 2011 / 12 (August 2011 - July 2012). There may be a slight increase in fees for courses starting 2012 / 13.
