What's it all about? 

Can you put people at ease? Do you have loads of patience? Are you creative? Then you've got a good head start in the skills that you'll need to make a success of a career in hairdressing. On our course you will get a thorough grounding in the theory and practice with external visits and competitions to help you find the self-assurance and competence to pursue a career in the hair and beauty industry.

The first qualification, the certificate, must be achieved before progression onto the diploma. Excellent attendance and a positive attitude are essential to ensure progression.

Please note there maybe potential kit and uniform costs to enable you to participate fully with your course. Depending on your course of study, as a rough guide, the price of kit and uniform will cost between £200 and £230.

Progression 

On successful completion you may progress to:
• an Apprenticeship in women's hairdressing or barbering
• the VRQ level 3 qualification in women's hairdressing
• employment in the hairdressing industry as a salon assistant or junior stylist.

Entry Requirements 

In our experience in order to be successful on this level of course you will need one of the following:

  • four GCSEs at grades D-F (including English and maths)
  • a BTEC foundation diploma
  • an NVQ Level 1 in hairdressing (successful completion of the Foundation Learning Tier)
  • successful completion of the Jumpstart programme
  • successful completion of the PLP/Prince's Trust programme
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

Duration 

One year

Are there any exams? 

These qualifications are mostly assignment based, with an online external exam towards the end of the course. Practical competence is assessed throughout the course.

The VRQ is a blend of external tests and assignments.

All of your achievements will be recorded on your record of achievement, if applicable.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

This course aims to develop practical hairdressing skills and theoretical knowledge related to hairdressing to enable you to gain employment within the hairdressing industry.

The subjects you will cover include:

  • customer services
  • health and safety in the salon
  • consultation skills
  • shampooing and conditioning
  • stlying
  • colouring
  • cutting
  • perming
  • barbering.

You will need to be successful in the first year completing the diploma in hairdressing to progress onto the VRQ level 3 in hairdressing.

A work placement is vital to enhance your assessment opportunities and to provide you with valuable work experience. A placement will also help to improve your skills, ability and confidence and will enhance your prospects of progressing into employment.

When can I study? 

Three days per week plus one day in a salon placement to gain industrial experience
