What's it all about? 

Do you want a career in the armed forces or emergency services? If so, this course offers you the opportunity to develop the skills you need to help you achieve your career goals. During the course there will be an introduction to each of the public services, their roles and selection procedures. This will include an appropriate number of visits and visiting speakers which will enable you to work closely with both the armed forces and emergency services. The whole course is underpinned by a programme of sport and fitness training including Dartmoor expeditions, camping, rock-climbing and abseiling, and is delivered by serving and ex-public service employees.

Progression 

On successful completion you may progress to:

  • employment in the armed forces, the leisure industry or in other areas pending the application to a public service eg police, fire and rescue etc
  • a level 2 course offered at the College.

Entry Requirements 

There are no specific entry requirements, however you must show a willingness to engage and a genuine interest in the course that will enable you to progress into employment or further education.

Duration 

One year

Are there any exams? 

The course will be assessed internally by coursework and practical assessment.

 

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

The course includes the following study areas:

  • introduction to expedition skills
  • public service incidents
  • personal skills for the public services
  • improving health and fitness for entry into the uniformed public service
  • public service careers
  • planning and participating in an event
  • practical teamwork in the public service
  • public service project
  • forensic detection
  • self-management skills

Extra curricular activities include:

  • Poland – each year the programme team take a party of students to various places of historical interest
  • Ten Tors expedition
  • Army - look at ‘army life’ and visit the Royal Marine Commando Training Centre at Lympstone.

If you are aged 16-18, due to Government funding, tuition fees may not be applicable for your course (Please note: this does not apply to foundation degrees or access to higher education courses, and other courses not eligible for public funding).

Please note that fees quoted apply to courses starting in the academic year 2011 / 12 (August 2011 - July 2012). There may be a slight increase in fees for courses starting 2012 / 13.
