What's it all about? 

This qualification is about working in a retail environment. You will find it appropriate if you are already competent in a significant variety of retail work activities. For example:

  • senior sales assistants
  • team leaders
  • supervisors and managers.

Progression 

Upon successful completion, you may progress to the NVQ in Management Level 5 offered at the College.

Entry Requirements 

You must:

  • be employed in the retail environment
  • be in a mangement role
  • have support from your line manager
  • have the opportunity to collect evidence in work and undertake work place observations.

Duration 

One year

Roll On Roll Off? 

Yes

Are there any exams? 

There is no exam. However, you will need to collect a variety of evidence such as statements, observations and testimonies to build a portfolio.  All of this will be under the guidance of an assessor.  Once the criteria for each unit have been met, the unit will be signed off as competent.

 

It is a requirement of enrolment that you submit work, contact or meet with your assessor at least once a month in order to avoid being withdrawn.  Before enrolling you need to consider this point carefully in order to be sure that you are able to commit to participating on this basis.

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

This pathway is in the area of visual merchandising, however, other pathways are also available in sales professional and management. To achieve the full award, you must complete 43 credits (selection shown below) which can be selected in accordance to your specific job role.

Mandatory Credit

  • Work effectively in your retail organisation.

Additional Credits

  • Organise the receipt and storage of goods in a retail environment.
  • Choose merchandise to feature in visual merchandising displays.
  • Plan, monitor and control how graphics are used in visual merchandising displays.
  • Monitor the effect of visual merchandising displays and layouts.
  • Allocate, monitor and control visual merchandising project resources against budgets.
  • Contribute to developing and putting into practice the company’s visual merchandising policy.
  • Create plans, elevations and drawings to realise visual merchandising ideas.
  • Help to manage a retail team.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of retail operations.
