What's it all about?

You already fit the bill for a career in retail. You have already proved in practice that you are a 'people person', enthusiastic in providing quality service, decisive and self-motivated, analytical and flexible. With our work based learning course, under your belt, you will now be able to get a formal qualification that will recognise your professionalism, which will stand you in good stead for your next career step.

Progression

Successful students may progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Retail Skills at the College.

What does the course involve?

This qualification is about working in a retail environment. You will find it appropriate if you are:

already competent in basic skills and require recognition of a wider range of abilities in retailing
wishing to demonstrate competence gained previously in retailing or associated industries.

To achieve the full award candidates must achieve 37 credits in total, including one mandatory unit of 11 credits.

A choice of 58 specific units which are tailored to the retail industry. There are a range of optional units available, some of the more popular ones are shown below ...

Receive goods and materials into storage in a retail environment
Put goods and materials into storage in a retail environment
Keep stock on sale at required levels in a retail environment
Process payments for purchases in a retail environment
Give customers a positive impression of yourself and your organisation
Display stock to promote sales to customers in a retail environment
Provide information and advice to customers in a retail environment

Entry Requirements

You will:

have to be employed in a retail environment
have to have support from your line manager
have the opportunity to collect evidence in work
be able to build a portfolio
have the opportunity for workplace observations.

Are there any exams?

Assessment is via observation in the workplace and through a portfolio of evidence.

Six months

If you are aged 16-18, due to Government funding, tuition fees may not be applicable for your course (Please note: this does not apply to foundation degrees or access to higher education courses, and other courses not eligible for public funding).

Please note that fees quoted apply to courses starting in the academic year 2012 / 13 (August 2012 - July 2013). There may be a slight increase in fees for courses starting 2013 / 14.
