What's it all about? 

The Diploma in Teaching is an in-service route to fully qualified teacher status in the Lifelong learning sector (QTLS). The learning sector not only embraces FE colleges and adult or compulsory-based learning, but also work-based and public sector training. You will acquire a practical teaching and training toolkit to use in your everyday professional role. You will also develop reflective and critical skills to enhance your practice and know how to maintain your continuing professional development.

Progression 

Upon completion you may progress to higher level courses at the College.

Entry Requirements 

This foundation degree-level course is part-time and in-service; this means you need to be in a suitable teaching of training post to enter the course. A minimum of 150 hours teaching / training practice is required over the two years of the course. You need to be suitably qualified in one or more specialist subjects or vocational areas. In most cases this will be a level 3 or above qualification. You will also need level 2 or above literacy skills. You need to be able to appoint a mentor; someone who is a fully qualified teacher or trainer in your subject specialism. Your mentor will support your specialist professional development.

You will also need to have a level 3 or 4 entry qualification in teachinhg, such as the City and Guilds 7303, 7302 or 7307.

The Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) course shows you have completed a full teacher training qualification. Typically, fully qualified teachers work in FE colleges and organisations offering publically funded courses. This is the minimum national standard for teachers in the sector.

Unit assignments and observations of your teaching or training (no exams).

Course Content

What does the course involve? 

You will attend one taught class a week (four hours) and be able to undertake about four to eight hours self study per week throughout the course and complete assignments for each unit. You will also be observed in your teaching practice by both course tutors and your mentor.

Certain "part-time" courses may become "full-time" courses if additional courses are taken.

If you are aged 16-18, due to Government funding, tuition fees may not be applicable for your course (Please note: this does not apply to foundation degrees or access to higher education courses, and other courses not eligible for public funding).

Please note that fees quoted apply to courses starting in the academic year 2011 / 12 (August 2011 - July 2012). There may be a slight increase in fees for courses starting 2012 / 13.
