Train to Gain
What is Train to Gain?
Train to Gain is government funding that is available to help employers in training and up-skilling members of their workforce.
Through Train to Gain’ your employees receive flexible, customised training that your business needs to succeed. This means that your employees have the right skills to do the best job as all the work they produce as part of the training is work related.
What are the benefits of Train to Gain?
By participating in 'Train to Gain', City College Plymouth can help you:
- secure some, if not all, of the training costs (reimbursement of wage costs while the employee is training and is away from their job role may also be available)
- increase productivity and profitability

Who is eligible for Train to Gain funding?
Any employee from any organisation (including charities). Employees need to be over the age of 19, and those who do not already have academic or vocational qualifications equivalent to NVQ level 2 or give GCSE at grades A-C.
Leadership and Management Grant
The Leadership and Management grant allows owner managers and company directors to apply for funding to develop their leadership skills.
Up to £,1000
- £500 to managing directors, owner managers and company directors
- £500 more, which must be matched funded, to any senior manager or management team
For companies with five - 249 staff
A qualified and experienced Business Skills Advisor will help you identify your own personal training and development needs.
Wage Contribution
Contribution to Wage Costs for Training
City College Plymouth can offer a contribution to wage costs for employers who have eligible employees taking part in approved training during their normal working hours. This will be paid when your employees have achieved their approved qualification.
Who is eligible?
If you are an employer with less than 50 full-time employees, or equivalent, you may be eligible for a contribution to wage costs for each employee who takes up a Train to Gain programme of learning and achieves their approved qualification. Employees should be working towards and achieve a full level 2 qualification, a basic skills qualification and in some cases a level 3 qualification.
How much is the contribution?
You can choose to claim either £5 per hour or the actual net hourly rate for employees that are released for direct training with us. You can claim up to a maximum of 70 hours in total.
Please note that we will only pay this contribution for employees who achieve their qualification.
