Foundation Degrees

Foundation degrees are exciting and innovative higher education qualifications. These qualifications are already very popular with UK and international students.

City College Plymouth foundation degrees are:

• two year full-time courses taught at the College but awarded by Plymouth University
• designed in partnership with Plymouth University
• qualifications in their own right, so it is possible to complete after two years with either a FdSc (Foundation Degree Science) or a FdA (Foundation Degree Arts) OR
• if you successfully complete the foundation degree to the required standard you are eligible for a place at Plymouth University on the third and final year of a named and relevant Bachelors degree, where available.

So why should you choose a foundation degree?

• You will normally be taught in small groups of 15-20 students, with individual and group tutorial support.
• Our IELTS requirement is 5.5.
• Tuition fees are lower than most universities.
• If you complete the two years at the College and the final year at Plymouth University, you will receive exactly the same award as students who have studied at the University for three years.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have performed well in their own school leaving examinations and be at least 18 years of age when the course starts. Applicants should also have a recognised English language qualification equivalent to IELTS 5.5.  Some foundation degrees require qualifications in certain subjects, such as science and maths.

Mature students over the age of 22 without formal qualifications, but with significant relevant work experience will be considered for entry. Information on applying for foundation degrees and the UCAS applications system is available from the International Office - international@cityplym.ac.uk.
