National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs)

Work-related qualifications which apply the practical skills and knowledge you learn, at College, directly into the workplace. They can be studied full-time at the College or part-time while in a job, work placement or on an Apprenticeship.

14-19 Diplomas

As an alternative to the traditional GCSE/A level route, Diplomas offer a work-related style of learning, which is valued by both employers and universities, and also includes work experience.

Apprenticeships

For the school leaver who wants to follow the work-based route, there is a choice between an Apprenticeship (level 2) or an Advanced Apprenticeship (level 3). You are employed and receive a wage whilst training with an employer.

BTEC First and National Awards/Certificates/Diplomas

These are related to particular employment sectors. Firsts are at an intermediate level, equivalent to GCSEs. Nationals are equivalent to A level standard and can lead on to higher education or employment.

AS and A2 Levels

This route involves you in continuous study - one year for AS level and two years for an A2 level. At City College Plymouth you can either study an AS/A2 programme, or combine AS/A2 levels with a choice of vocational options such as business or media.

BTEC Higher National Certificates

These are higher-level qualifications which relate to a particular employment sector, and tend to be equivalent to the first and/or second stage of a degree. They are for students who are normally aged 18+ and have successfully completed an A level, BTEC national, or other advanced level course.

Foundation Degrees

These are employment-related higher education qualifications equivalent to the first and second stage of a degree, developed by the College with employers. They are designed to include workplace experience, learning and assessment whilst providing a route for progression to the final year of a named honours degree at specified universities.

Volunteering

Vtalent is a one-year programme aimed at anyone aged between16 and 25, who would like to gain experience of working with young people. It offers you the chance to volunteer within the College and receive a nationally recognised qualification at the end of the programme. What’s more you get paid too! Functional Skills

All full-time students(excluding A level students) study functional skills - skills that prepare you for the workplace or further study. These include:

  • information technology.
