Providing education and training to Plymouth, Devon, Cornwall and the wider community
City College Plymouth is celebrating the graduation of its 2008/9 Jumpstart students – with a ceremony highlighting their journey and subsequent successes throughout the programme
is a programme designed to support young people in their final year or years of compulsory education. The programme aims to help young people feel good about their education so that they can fulfil their learning potential, now and in the future. As well as improving their maths, English and IT skills - they have the opportunity to experience vocational subjects such as hairdressing, woodwork, beauty therapy, plumbing, business studies and engineering.
One of Jumpstart’s many success stories is Steven Smith – Steven was referred to the Jumpstart programme after being removed from school for his behaviour. His autism had created some barriers to learning and confusion when interacting with other learners.
Since joining the Jumpstart programme, Steven has been encouraged to express his creativity. As a result he has been writing a science fiction book, which has improved his literacy and communication skills. He has made staff aware of his own issues, and cooperated with staff and learners to overcome them.
Steven is now set to start on a Public Services course at City College Plymouth and of course continue with his book.
Steve Murphy, Jumpstart Operations Manager commented: “Jumpstart provides such a realistic opportunity for these young people to get their lives back on track.
“Working with each student’s individual needs, we’re able to boost confidence and self-awareness, and as a result enabling and encouraging young people to return to mainstream education or further education and training.”
