College Awards its Students of the Term

City College Plymouth has hosted an event to celebrate the successes achieved by its students over the Autumn term.

The Student(s) of the Term scheme was introduced in September 2008 to recognise and reward those students who are making a positive contribution to their course, the College or the local community. Each faculty has its own Student of the Term, and one of these is chosen by the Principal to be the ‘College Student of the Term,’ and one is chosen by the Students’ Union (SU) President to be the ‘SU Student of the Term.’

Jake Newcombe, an Employment to Entry (e2e) student was nominated as the ‘Principal’s Student of the Term’ for his commitment to a community project at Ford Park Cemetery. Jake completed 150 hours on the project, digging, cleaning and generally tidying neglected graves in all weathers. Jake’s commitment to the project was a shining example to staff and students alike.

Amelia Greatrex, an A level student was nominated as the ‘SU Student of the Term’ for overcoming great adversity to be at the College. She has escaped an abusive upbringing, alcohol and drug addiction to turn her life around. Amelia now counsels young people like herself in a voluntary capacity, participates in conferences on the subject of drug abuse and sits on the panel for potential foster carers. She also has a part-time job with Social Services.

The event was attended by all 15 Autumn ‘Student of the Term’ winners, plus their guests and nominating tutors, as well as heads of faculties. They were presented with a certificate and a high street voucher from Vice Principal, Phil Hockey, and received congratulations from Students’ Union President, Sergiu Filuta.
