Adult Funding Programme is a Huge Success

City College Plymouth’s government funded adult learning programme has been a huge success, attracting over 450 people to its free short courses.

The College was awarded £125,000 of the government’s Transformation Fund in October 2009 to run C-Change, an informal adult learning programme.

The project provided informal learning opportunities for over 450 people in Plymouth, in just five months, and was run in partnership with 19 organisations including, The Theatre Royal, Diggin’ It, Granby Island, North Prospect Community Centre, ODILS, and the Shekinah Mission.

Free courses such as art classes, card making, photography, dads and lads construction, writing for the stage, soft play, table decorating and history of Plymouth courses were all available throughout the city.

Fiona Horrell, Project Manager at City College Plymouth, said: “This project has been fantastic - to engage with so many people in such a short space of time, goes to show how important informal learning is to the people of Plymouth.

“The outcomes have been better than expected too, with learners who have left school with no formal qualifications thoroughly enjoying the courses so much so that they have gone on to formal learning opportunities.”

This is the largest project of its kind in the South West and although the funding ended in March, the College is hopeful that it will be awarded with additional funding in the future.

The College will be celebrating the success of the project at its Kings Road centre on Thursday 22 April from 6.00pm.
