City College Plymouth students attending the renowned Peter Jones Enterprise Academy have started the new academic year suited and booted and raring to go.
The Peter Jones Enterprise Academy provides an opportunity for aspiring entrepreneurs to realise and achieve their business dreams. It was founded by entrepreneur and star of Dragons’ Den, Peter Jones CBE, with a view to encouraging more entrepreneurial activity within the UK, based on a philosophy of ‘learning by doing’. The Academy was the first to offer further education courses in enterprise and entrepreneurship in the UK where students are actually required to set up and run their own business.
The eight students who all started the course this week are studying a level 3 BTEC in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship. With honing entrepreneurial skills at its heart - and with the view of bringing the boardroom to the classroom, the course includes master classes, work experience, entrepreneurial learning, business challenges, workshops and company visits.
As well as learning how to be an entrepreneur of the future, students will be able to glean information and valuable skills from industry experts through workshops with employers. The students already have a busy timetable and this week’s lessons include sessions with local entrepreneurs.
Tina Sibley, who is a professional speaker and trainer, is giving a workshop on personal confidence and communication. Emma-Jane Lewis, owner of Creative Alchemy is giving a ‘my journey' session as an entrepreneur.
Course leader, Alison Chapman said: “The students have worked hard this week, working well as a team, engaging in the activities that have been running all week to give them a kick-start to their new careers. The addition the input from real business people is fantastic, really bringing the boardroom to the classroom!”
Student, Tom Carmichael, said: “I learnt how important reputation is to business success - when developing my business enterprise I will make sure I make good networks.”
