College’s Catering Students Celebrate Medals Success
Students from City College Plymouth are celebrating after winning 41 medals from one competition! 44 students from the College’s catering and hospitality courses entered the Major Series competition, which is sponsored by the Craft Guild of Chefs, and was held at South Devon College. In total, students from City College Plymouth won 13 gold medals, nine silver medals, 11 bronze medals and nine certificates of merit. The competition is open to all further education colleges and the winners of the regional heats will go on to the national finals. The competition’s categories included static food displays, live culinary challenge, themed table setting, cocktail making and a cook and serve flambé demonstration. Deputy Head of Business and Leisure Industries, Helen Marshall, said: “The students spent a lot of time preparing and practising for the competition, with the supervision of their tutors, and were excited about the opportunity to compete against their peers from other colleges. “Students at the College benefit from exceptional facilities including four newly refurbished training kitchens and a demonstration theatre, as well as a 70-seat fine dining restaurant. These facilities match industry standards and enable the highly qualified teaching team to pass on their skills and breadth of knowledge to students.” Callum Foale, who is studying a Diploma in Professional Cookery and Food Service, entered the themed table setting and static bread roll categories. He won a gold and silver medal and said: “Taking part in the competition was a great opportunity, and I am ecstatic that I won! The staff support and training at City College Plymouth really helps to bring out the best in people.” |

College Staff Hit the Road for Apprenticeship Week
During National Apprenticeship Week (6 - 10 February), City College Plymouth’s Youth Liaison Team will be going on tour with an 'Apprenticeship Week Roadshow'. Staff will be travelling far and wide, visiting schools and youth groups, giving interactive presentations and workshops so that young people can learn about the advantages of becoming an apprentice. Benefits include earning a salary, receiving training, gaining qualifications and learning job-specific skills. Kate Wells, Marketing Officer at the College, said: “Young people deserve our encouragement to explore every available option as they face the often daunting reality of choosing a career path. A levels and university are not the only route, and in light of the further economic downturn, more and more people are beginning to see the advantages of vocational training and the opportunities it is able to offer. “We are really pleased that so many schools and youth groups in the area see the importance of promoting Apprenticeships to young people. Throughout the year the Youth Liaison Team is on hand to visit schools and youth groups, give presentations and arrange activities, and tours at the College.” During the week staff will be visiting Coombe Dean School, Tavistock College, Brixham College, Heles School, South Dartmoor Community College, Kingsbridge Community College, Liskeard Community College and Coxside Youth Club If you would like the Youth Liaison Team to visit your school or youth group, or would like to arrange an activity, call 01752 856800 or e-mail youthliaison@cityplym.ac.uk. |

Former Apprentice Winner Lee McQueen Reveals His Tricks of the Trade
Lee, who had a successful career in recruitment and advertising, beat 20,000 participants to take ‘The Apprentice’ title in 2008. After successfully setting up Amscreen, with Simon Sugar, he left Lord Sugar’s company in 2010 to start his own business to find and develop 'Raw Talent'. The celebratory evening will commence with a forage and feast cookery demonstration from local foraging expert, Dave Beazley. Dave will show guests how to make a delicious meal using ‘free’ food, foraged from our local seashore! Once the demo has taken place guests will take their seats in the College’s Cité Restaurant for a five-course dinner where we will celebrate the start of National Apprenticeship Week and the Apprenticeship successes of City College Plymouth. Over coffee, guests will hear from Lee about his journey from Apprentice winner to managing director of his own company. Lee will be addressing over fifty industry leaders from across the city, and will share with them the importance of having an entrepreneurial attitude and approach to business - and the significance of Apprenticeships in today’s society. Lee McQueen, said: “I am delighted to be visiting Plymouth and in particular City College Plymouth. The value apprentices bring to business cannot be underestimated - the outstanding work being done at the College around the delivery of its Apprenticeship’s is to be applauded. “I am looking forward to spending time with the students - I am passionate about encouraging enterprise and supporting young people in fulfilling their personal goals. The seminar’s I will be hosting will, I hope, motivate and inspire them to achieve.” Sharron Robbie, Corporate Relations Manager at the College, said: “We are delighted to welcome Lee to the College as our guest of honour. As well as talking about his commitment to supporting young people, Lee will share some of his experiences as an apprentice to Lord Sugar, which promises to be very entertaining! College Responds to the Needs of Industry!
City College Plymouth is meeting the needs of its customers by offering a unique, flexible approach to its Hairdressing Apprenticeships. Hairdressing Apprenticeships are usually delivered at the College one day per week, with the rest of the time spent in a salon. The College listened to the needs of its students and employers and is now offering a very flexible delivery approach. This can include a structured learning day that delivers theory, practical and tutorial sessions, or if salons prefer to train their apprentices in-house, with the support of College assessors, this can be done too. There is also the option to mix and match delivery options with a negotiated attendance learning plan. Louise Harrop, Hair and Beauty Programme Area Manager at the College, said: “There is a clear demand for this flexible approach - college training, salon-based training or a bit of both! We will work with employers’ requests and the individual student’s needs for the best fit. Whatever the employer and the apprentice require, we can do it!” Jacob Broom, who works at ME Hairdressing in Tavistock, said: “I have really enjoyed studying hairdressing at the College. I have had the opportunity to take part in lots of hair competitions, trips and activities and I am proud to say I have won a few awards too! “All of these experiences, along with great training have helped me to achieve a managerial role within a great salon. I look forward to the challenges and opportunities that the future holds for me in this exciting industry.” As the largest and most successful provider of Apprenticeships in the South West, City College Plymouth is the ideal choice for students to achieve success. The success of hairdressing apprentices is 97% for level 2 and 100% for level 3 - significantly above the national benchmark, proving how the support and additional training delivered has such a positive impact on students’ experience and progress. City College Plymouth offers a wide range of hair and beauty Apprenticeships including women’s hairdressing, nail technology and barbering at levels 2 and 3. If you are interested in an Apprenticeship in the hair and beauty industry, or are an employer looking to take on an apprentice call 01752 305300. |
