‘Jet Around the World’ at City College Plymouth

Students at City College Plymouth have organised a travel and tourism fun day for a group of year five and six children from The Cathedral School of St Mary, Stonehouse.

The event ‘Jet Around the World’, is taking place on Friday 25 May and will include a range of activities including making cabin crew uniforms out of crepe paper, completing safety demonstrations, using materials to build tourist attractions, designing a new flag for a country and much more.

Nicola Blair, lecturer at the College, said: “Our students have organised a number of fun and educational activities for the primary school children to take part in. All of the activities link in with the curriculum and provide the children with an insight into the variety of projects involved in the travel and tourism course.

Our students have displayed excellent organisational skills during the planning of this project and we’re looking forward to putting on an enjoyable event for the children, and showcasing the College’s marvellous mock airline cabin.

Tim Driscoll, class teacher at The Cathedral School of St Mary, said: “My class have been working really hard during the run up to their exams, so this is a fantastic opportunity to reward them for all their hard work and has given them something to look forward to.

They are all very excited and I am looking forward to taking part in such a fantastic event.”

College Hosts Graduation

A graduation ceremony is being held at City College Plymouth to celebrate the success of local school pupils.

The 91 students have all completed a vocational qualification in their chosen sector. The qualifications required them to attend City College Plymouth for one or two days a week over a one/ two-year period - where they had the opportunity to study towards a number of vocational qualifications, including automotive, hairdressing, hospitality and public services.

Danielle Farnaby, 14-18 Co-ordinator at the College, said: “Young people's achievements aren’t recognised as much as they should be, so it’s fantastic to have over 200 people willing to celebrate the vocational achievements of our 14-18 provision.”

“Let’s not forget that they have not only had their normal schooling to complete, but the additional demand of their College course as well. We are all extremely proud of their achievements and they should be too.”

For further information about the courses offered, please contact the College’s Work-based Learning department on 01752 856827.

Students Tackle Child Sex Trafficking

Three media students from City College Plymouth have been tackling the issues of child sex trafficking, in a special collaboration with the NHS.

The students, Millie Steel and Jessica Linden who are both 18, and Chloe Adams who is 17, were asked by the NHS to make a film about the kidnapping of children for sex trafficking.

The film will be used as an educational tool in schools and hospitals throughout the South West, with the aim of helping people to identify children who may have been, or may be at risk from, sex trafficking.

The students were assisted by their media lecturers, Lizzie Toms and Rob Chadwick, as well as the College’s safeguarding coordinator, Phil Smale. They thoroughly researched the subject by attending lectures about safeguarding, inspiring them with ideas about what the documentary should cover and who they could interview.

The students arranged a series of interviews with a senior nursing manager, a doctor, a police officer and a member of the Children and Adolescent Mental Health team, with each person providing a different perspective on the issue. Filming took place in a variety of places around Plymouth, including Derriford Hospital and the city centre, using College drama students as actors.

Rob Chadwick, the students’ media lecturer, said: “This is the biggest project we’ve ever arranged for the media students and it is an unbelievable opportunity and responsibility for them to take on. I’m very proud of the three students involved as  they have worked incredibly hard and have delivered a fantastic product.”

Student, Jessica Linden, said: “We took on the challenge and found the project an interesting, yet difficult topic to deal with. The filming was very carefully planned and we were always liaising with the NHS team, every step of the way, to make sure we were on the right track.

“To prepare for our filming and to learn about this over looked issue, we undertook a lot of research and interviews. Throughout the filming process, we have worked closely with the Safeguarding team at the College, and with nurses who come into contact with trafficked children. We have found the whole process quite challenging and a steep learning curve, but are really thrilled with the end result!”

College Principal, Phil Davies, said: “I’m exceptionally proud of our students - they have worked extremely hard to research this emotive subject and highlight the issue of sex trafficking in the area, and the risk it poses to young people.

Dr Alex Mayor, Medical Director for Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “We are pleased to have contributed to this film. As recent cases in the media have highlighted, this is a universal problem and a major concern, which has previously been largely unrecognised and has been on the increase in recent years. The film demonstrates the importance of a multi-agency approach and brings this difficult topic to the forefront of people’s minds.

“The students have done an excellent job in tackling this subject sensitively and we would like to thank them for their hard work.”

The documentary is being premiered at a special launch event at The Barbican Theatre on Wednesday 23 May.

The film, which was an idea initiated by Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, will be funded by the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) and the Skills Funding Agency Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Partnership Project Fund.

College Celebrates ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted Report

City College Plymouth is celebrating today after its childcare nursery, Curious Kittens, received an outstanding Ofsted report.

The College has two nurseries and both are inspected separately. The Kings Road setting has been judged as outstanding, the top grade, for ever aspect of its childcare provision. The Ofsted inspection report highlights the dedication and professionalism of the nursery staff in providing a safe and stimulating environment for the children. The report emphasises the continued use of reflective self-evaluation by staff to ensure that all children ‘are sensitively supported in their progress and development in order to achieve their full potential’.

The Ofsted inspector, who visited the College nursery at the end of April, found that ‘children of all ages engage in a rich, varied and imaginative range of activities that sustain their interest very effectively and provide excellent opportunities to enhance their learning and development’. Curious Kittens was also praised for its team work, which extends to external agencies across the city - ‘highly effective partnerships with parents, other professionals and schools enables adults to work together cohesively to provide excellent continuity of care and give children the best start in life’.

Nursery manager, Julie Griffiths said: “It is wonderful to have the staff at Curious Kittens and the achievements of the children in our care recognised and highly praised by the Ofsted inspector. The parents of our children know that their children are well cared for and that as a team we are committed to providing an outstanding experience for each and every one of them. The Ofsted report is confirmation of this.

Without exception, all of us enjoy the work we do and appreciate the privileged position we are in, helping young children to achieve their full potential.”

Curious Kittens offers childcare for children aged six months to school age, and a holiday club for children up to the age of eleven. It caters for the children of students, staff and the local community.

There are close links between Curious Kittens nurseries and the childcare courses run by the College. This allows childcare students to see exemplary childcare practice in action through visits and work placements.
