Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) - why are they important and what kind of careers can they lead to? Well the possibilities are endless, and here at City College Plymouth, we offer courses that will develop your skills and help you on your way to success.
STEM subjects are for EVERYONE! They are really important because careers in these industries really do change the world, and at City College Plymouth we offer lots of courses that can enable you to go on and make a successful career out of science, technology, engineering and maths subjects.
Engineers do everything from making sure buildings stay upright to working in developing countries, creating low cost but highly efficient ways of getting fresh water to the people who need it most. Engineers also design bridges and make sure roller coasters will work properly.
Have you ever wondered how a perfume or fragrance is created, or how wind or solar energy is turned into electricity for your home? A career in science can vary across many industries, if you’re interest is in biology, perhaps a career in developing artificial organs to be used for organ transplants could be for you? Chemists work in many fields including with companies such as L’Oreal, advising on their products and making sure the ingredients are safe. Physics experts can work in aerospace, developing airplanes or spacecraft, are you the designer of the spacecraft which discovers life on Mars?
A career built on maths can lead to many things, such as making weather forecasts! Monitoring the weather and predicting what it might do next is a skill that many people rely on daily, from fishermen to athletes. Maths is also used to make sure businesses are running properly and to sell and trade shares on the world’s stock markets.
Without technology there would be no computers, phones, emails, television, CDs or MP3s, or films. Jobs in based in technology include software designers, who create the programmes that we use on computers, other jobs include music producers, who take the live sound a band or singer makes and put it into a digital format.
STEM subjects really are for everyone and the City College Plymouth has a huge range of courses on offer that can get you well on your way to taking the first steps of your career. Why not come along to one of our open days to find out more about the courses and life at College?!
