Regional Centre of Excellence for STEM

Printer-friendly version

City College Plymouth is working on an exciting new project to develop a £13m Regional Centre of Excellence for STEM.

Due to open in Autumn 2017, this major new state-of-the-art Centre, which aims to train students in key priority sectors for the City, is not just a shiny new building, but a space that will provide real workplace environments designed and supported by key employers.

STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) related industries are vital to the UK economy and the Government has made increasing the quality and quantity of teaching in STEM subjects a national priority. STEM is also at the core of Plymouth's priorities to provide growth and investment in skills development, support job creation and drive productivity and promote enterprise.

The College is working closely with local employers to develop the Centre. This means that this new facility, which fits well with the Plymouth Local Economic Strategy and the Plymouth City Deal, will help meet emerging employer and strategic needs. It will also help to ensure that Britain's Ocean City is recognised as a world leader in STEM development.

Employer sponsors

Students enrolling on a full or part-time course or Apprenticeship at City College will gain unique access to our modern STEM Centre, further developing entrepreneurial skills into the mainstream curriculum and improving higher education participation and retention.

In replicated ‘real work’ environments across a range of industry sectors, our students will be able to get hands-on experience in a wide variety of industrial disciplines and develop the skills, knowledge, behaviours and competencies required by employers.

It is the College's mission to be the leading provider of innovative, technical, professional education in the South West, with a particular emphasis on STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths). The new Regional Centre of Excellence for STEM will support the College in achieving this and help to secure future employment and economic security for our students and for local businesses operating in the City and wider region.
