Printer-friendly version

If you need help with literacy (English), or numeracy (maths) then our team of specialist lecturers can provide extra tuition.

Additional maths or additional English is available for those who:

  • want to boost their confidence in either of these subjects
  • want to fill gaps in their knowledge or skills
  • have low GCSE grades
  • want to work at a slower pace
  • want to be taught in a different way to school lessons
  • want to overcome anxiety about these subjects.

If any one of the above applies to you, please ask your course tutor to refer you. A specialist lecturer can work with you either in one of your course lessons or in a workshop tailored to your needs. Either way, we aim to help you to successfully complete your course.

Case studies of students we’ve helped …

A mature student on a GCSE maths course had no confidence at all with maths. It was a subject that she paid no attention to at school and she did not sit the GCSE. Now in her thirties, she wants to be a nurse. For this she has to get into university, but needs a GCSE grade C in maths to get onto the Access course at the College.

She enrolled onto a GCSE maths course and attended additional maths classes. It was hard going for her at first, but as a result, she gradually grew in confidence, used the additional maths classes to the full and achieved a grade C in only eight months of study.

A student on a painting and decorating course came to the College with a very low level of literacy and could only read what he classed as ‘baby’ books. He was unable to understand the questions on the vocational exam papers. After attending additional English classes for nine months, his reading ability went up by two levels and he passed his written exam with flying colours!

A student on an electrical installation course struggled with the maths content of the course and was heading for failure. He attended additional maths classes for six months and the lecturer gave him a more interactive way of learning maths. He passed his course and progressed onto the next level.
