Accessing Higher Education at City College

12 May 2017 | Access to HE & GCSEs

Returning to education has become an increasingly popular pathway, with mature students now making up a significant part of the student population.  Access to Higher Education courses are the first step for those looking to study a practical and relevant course to support their specific career goals or looking to get back into education and progress on to a university-level programme.

City College runs almost 40 different full and part-time Access to Higher Education courses, covering a range of subjects from journalism and media, to science and engineering. The College also offers English and maths courses for those that missed out on the grades they needed at school.

Kurtis Kirk was holding down several jobs when he decided to change career paths. Taking on an Access to Higher Education course and following the English and maths programme has led Kurtis to a brighter future.

“I was working odd jobs from Monday to Friday and it felt like a bit of a dead end with no goals or career prospects,” said Kurtis. “So I decided to go back to education and enrolled at the College in 2013. I applied to do the Access course in Psychology and Human Biology which also combined English and maths.”

He continued: “I enjoyed every day studying at the College. I got to meet some amazing people, make new friends and was supported by the kind and friendly staff.”

Kurtis is now studying a Degree in Sports Therapy at the University of Plymouth. He plans to put his passion to good use in the sports sector and hopes to have a successful career. “The College has helped me achieve my goals. I never thought I would get to where I am today. The staff support and help you all the way through your course. They push you to achieve your goals and care about your future.

“I would recommend City College to anyone, especially with the new STEM build opening soon. It is going to be better than ever. It’s the place to become who you want to be!”
