Philip Orme wins gold at Southern Heat of Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year

A star apprentice from Plymouth has achieved first place at the southern heat of Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year competition.

Philip Orme, 23, from Barne Barton, a City College painting and decorating apprentice is no stranger to winning awards for his skill and craftsmanship.

During his Apprenticeship, Philip has been awarded first place in both the regional SkillBuild and last year’s Dulux Student Decorator of the Year competition. He was also recognised at City College Plymouth’s annual Student of the Year celebration in 2015 and can now add this most recent industry award to his increasingly impressive collection.

Syd Dart Painting and Decorating lecturer said: “Philip is one of our star students. He has worked extremely hard this year preparing for competitions, which has been in addition to the work that he normally undertakes at College. Philip has enjoyed huge success and we are all very proud of the standard of work that he has produced to win these competitions. We wish him every success when he competes in the two national finals, which are to be held later this year.”

Philip said: “I was really pleased to get this award. It means a lot for my work to be recognised.”

All those who took part in the heats of the competition at Bournemouth and Poole College are working towards an NVQ Level 2 in Painting and Decorating or Construction. Philip will compete in the national final in November of this year, held at Ricoh Arena in Coventry, where he will be in with a chance of winning £600 in prize money and a selection of painting and decorating supplies worth up to £2,000.
