From Apprentice to Employee – Law Firm Takes on New Team Member

From City College apprentice to part of an award-winning team, Yasmin Serter is evidence that the ‘earn as you learn’ qualification can really pay as she secured a full-time job with niche law firm, Portcullis Legals.

Founded by Chief Executive Officer, Trevor Worth, Portcullis Legals has a head office in Cornwood and ground-breaking retail law stores in Plymstock and St Budeaux. Awarded Herald Small Business of the Year in 2016 and the Innovation Award in 2017, the company approached City College to grow and develop their business through the Apprenticeship programme.

“The Apprenticeship programme enabled training to be delivered in-house so we could maximise Yasmin’s time in the workplace and make sure what she learnt was relevant to the legal business. Because she was training on-the-job, she managed to pick things up quickly and gave real value to Portcullis from day one.

“Since joining us, Yasmin has come on in leaps and bounds. Growing in confidence each day, she has shown great professionalism and we look forward to her having a long and fulfilling career at Portcullis.”

Yasmin, who is now part of the Client Services team, said: “I am so pleased to have secured a role within Portcullis, as I really love working here. I have learnt so much already and hope to continue growing and developing as a fully-fledged member of the team. All of this would not have been possible without my Apprenticeship – it has spring-boarded my career.”

City College is one of the largest Apprenticeship providers in the country, with a success rate 14% above the national average. Working with more than 1,300 local employers, the College’s award-winning programme has been rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted.
