‘Myth Busting’ Breakfast for Apprenticeship Levy and Reforms
From April, the way the Government funds Apprenticeships in England will change. Employers with a payroll in excess of £3million will have to pay an ‘Apprenticeship levy’ and there will also be changes to the funding of Apprenticeship training for all employers. With so many businesses in Plymouth and the wider area currently employing apprentices, this change could have a significant impact on the local business community.
Apprenticeships are not just for young people, but for anyone looking to start or change careers. Also, employers can use the programme to upskill and retrain existing staff. With a Government target of three million apprentices by 2020 the new reforms aim to make Apprenticeships more accessible.
Apprentices are assets to employers. Through an Apprenticeship, an individual can gain valuable skills that will help the growth and development of the organisation they work in. Their training can be tailored to meet the requirements of a specific job role, or the needs of the business. Developing an apprentice within a company creates a strong sense of loyalty and after qualifying, gives businesses a well-trained, highly skilled member of their workforce. After finishing, 90% of apprentices stay in employment, with seven in ten staying with the same employer. A quarter are promoted within 12 months of finishing.

The true potential of Apprenticeships will only be reached if all stakeholders, from Government to provider to employer, learn, work and adapt together to ensure that these programmes will allow us all to get what we ultimately want – a high-quality, highly skilled and highly valuable workforce.
