Care Sector Opportunities - Health and Social Care students

City College has partnered with the Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust and Livewell Southwest to create a new course in the care sector starting from this September.

The level 2 course in health and social care, which promotes the opportunities available to young people who want to work in the care sector, will give students the chance to undertake significant work experience at Derriford Hospital as well as studying at the College. Furthermore, on successful completion of the course, each student will be guaranteed a job interview with one of the partners involved in the programme.

Dawn Jones, Academy Manager of Science & Health Care at City College, said: “The College has a good reputation for working closely with employers to enhance our curriculum and student experience. This new course will combine hands-on work experience at Derriford Hospital and Livewell Southwest with the qualifications young people need to succeed in the care sector, as well as being supported by special guest lectures. Providing this unique combination will give young people the best start in their career in care.”

Steven Keith, Director of People for Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “We are delighted to be working with City College Plymouth on this exciting initiative. As a large local employer, with a wealth of employment opportunities available, we are keen to help and support local people gain the practical experience and education to enable them to embark on rewarding careers within the NHS.”

The Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust and Livewell Southwest employ over 10,000 people and the care sector is now a priority sector for the region. The new course is part of a city-wide approach to support skills shortages in the care sector and the local economy.
