Catering Students Bring Home Medal Haul

City College Plymouth’s catering and hospitality students have achieved major medal success at the prestigious Major Chefs Series, held in association with the Craft Guild of Chefs.

In total, nine aspiring chefs from the College donned their chefs’ whites to compete against South Devon, Cornwall and Exeter Colleges. Each of the Plymouth competitors brought home a medal, with the College winning two silver and six bronze awards in total.

The impressive medal haul came in the various categories in this, the first heat of the Major Series, which was held at South Devon College, Paignton, on Friday 2 February. The competition invited the students to test their skills against the clock in a diverse range of culinary crafts, including: street food; bread rolls; mini patisserie; speciality coffee; non-alcoholic cocktails; and themed table settings.

Chaz Talbot, Academy Manager of Hospitality and Care at the College, said: “We have some extremely talented students at the College and this competition really gave them a chance to demonstrate their skills, competing against some of the finest aspiring chefs in the region. Their achievements are even more impressive just a week after successfully ‘taking over’ the Duke of Cornwall Hotel’s kitchens where they gained experience of the hospitality and catering industry.

“I am incredibly proud of our students’ success and the professional way they conducted themselves throughout the competition – they were a credit of the College. To come back with such an impressive haul of medals and certificates is a testament to the hard work of both students and staff.”
