The Plymouth Barbell Club is hosting a weightlifting contest at City College. The Plymouth Barbell Weightlifting Open will see 40 competitors from as young as 15 taking part and is being supported by City College Strength and Conditioning Foundation Degree students. The students will be helping with the running of the event and assisting competitors with warm-up activities in the pre-competition practice area.

Billy Hannah, owner of the Plymouth Barbell Club, commented, “This event is an excellent opportunity to encourage weightlifters to consider strength and conditioning qualifications with the College whilst also providing students vital work experience with athletes.”

The Plymouth Barbell Club is looking for a new space in the City to train weightlifters and the College’s new Regional Centre of Excellence for STEM could be the answer. The new facility at Kings Road will boast a fantastic strength and conditioning suite, incorporating contemporary technology in athletic care and development.

“Working closely with local companies such as the Plymouth Barbell Club is really beneficial for developing our students’ knowledge in the most effective methods of training athletes for elite-level performance” said Ian Davis, Strength, Conditioning and Sports Coaching Programme Leader at the College. “The sport programmes we offer are all about getting involved with local events and supporting athletes of all levels and it is something that the students are always excited for. It’s a great chance for them to put their skills into practice.”

Spectators are invited to watch the competition at Kings Road, on Saturday 6 May, between 10.00am and 5.00pm. Anyone interested in finding out more about sport courses at the College should visit or call 01752 305300.
