After gaining two qualifications in IT, Luke began looking into Apprenticeships to build his skills. On completing his Apprenticeship assessments he was offered a role within the Human Resources department of City College Plymouth
“Once I had completed my IT courses I knew wanted to remain in education so I looked into Apprenticeship opportunities. After completing my tests I was immediately offered an interview for a Business Administration Apprenticeship in the Human Resources department of the College. I was lucky enough to be offered the place and went on to complete both level 2 and 3 qualifications.
“The best part about my Apprenticeship was that from day one I felt part of the team. I’m used to people trying to wrap me up in cotton wool, but the team made me feel valued and gave me responsibility over my own work. I was also well supported throughout my Apprenticeship; if I ever had a question nothing was too much trouble. I could draw on the wealth of knowledge of my colleagues whenever I wanted to know more or was unsure.
“Apprenticeships give you the opportunity to gain a qualification and a whole range of skills all whilst getting paid. They also give you insight and experience of the industry you’re interested in. If you’re not sure what you want to do with your future an Apprenticeship is still incredibly worthwhile as everything you learn is so transferable and nothing beats the work experience you gain.
“It is all well and good having the right qualifications but it doesn’t mean anything without the real world expertise and this is why Apprenticeships are so great. They offer the best of both worlds with a relevant qualification and the practical skills.
“Through this Apprenticeship I feel I have grown as a person and gained skills not just to use in the workplace but also in my day-to-day life. Choosing to be an apprentice at City College has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. I know I would not have the confidence or the skill set I have today without my Apprenticeship programme and the support of colleagues. This experience has helped me to discover my career path. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time and experience and I’m looking forward to the next chapter.”
After completing his Apprenticeship, Luke secured a role with the Finance team at City College and applied to go to university. He received unconditional offer to study computing at Worcester University and will start his course in September 2018.
