Millie Thomas

Millie Thomas started her Apprenticeship at the beginning of 2018 and has just recently been offered a full-time permanent position at City College Plymouth.

Millie first heard about the Admissions Assistant Apprenticeship whilst studying at the College and decided that the opportunity to gain qualifications whilst earning a salary was the right route for her.

About starting her Apprenticeship, Millie said: “I loved being at the College and really enjoyed the atmosphere on campus, but the course I was on wasn’t for me. Whilst I hadn’t really considered administration before, I felt it offered great prospects for progression, and being able to earn some money at the same time was a bonus.”

Millie joined the College’s busy Admissions team, which she said was the perfect role for her as it gave her the chance to work with a variety of people, including students. Millie added: “I like the fact I get to interact with students on a daily basis, but I also liaise with staff College-wide, and I’ve really enjoyed being able to build positive working relationships with so many people.

“I feel my confidence has grown so much as a result, and learning on the job really suited me.”

Millie joined the College as a level 2 apprentice and is now preparing to take the end-point assessment for her level 3 qualification. “I feel comfortable stepping into a variety of roles within the office thanks to the varied training I’ve received. I have learnt a broad range of skills and whilst I am delighted that I will now continue working alongside the team I have got to know so well over the past two and a half years, I would have felt confident working elsewhere, too.”

Millie’s manager, Admissions Officer, Elaine O’Sullivan, said: “Apprenticeships are fantastic for helping someone to develop crucial work skills, but also for helping someone to feel more confident. Millie has flourished during her time with us, and we are so pleased she will continue as a permanent member of the team.”
