Ryan Ford

Ryan, 22, joined City College Plymouth in September 2009, enrolling on the full-time skills development life skills course. He was keen to develop his independent living skills and personal confidence, so thought the course would be perfect.

Ryan said: “The staff were really friendly. I always felt supported and my confidence grew.”

Ryan quickly took to life at College and enthusiastically joined in with all the activities offered on the course, including accessing and staying safe in the community. He learned to cook for himself and took part in a variety of outdoor pursuits. Soon Ryan’s confidence had grown so much that he was able to carry out work placements.

Ryan achieved a NOCN Certificate in Independent Living and, after three years, progressed on to a part-time, post-19 course at the College to help develop his employability skills.

Since leaving the College, Ryan has achieved permanent paid work in a local school as an assistant caretaker.
