Construction Trainees Build on Skills at Annual Competition
19 July 2018 | Construction & the Building Trades
City College Plymouth’s construction students have excelled in the South West regional heats of the SkillBuild competition, bringing home an impressive eight medals.
SkillBuild, delivered by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), is the largest multi-trade competition in the UK for construction trainees and apprentices. A series of heats sees the very best compete against each other to be crowned a winner in their chosen trade.
This year’s South West heat was held at South Devon College and out of City College’s thirteen students eight came home with medals.
All of the students were outstanding in their categories, with four students winning gold: Kane Cook, advanced brickwork category; Lee Norris, advanced plastering category; Isla Hill plastering new entrant category and Anna Southern, painting and decorating new entrant category.
Charlie Pond, Academy Manager of Construction and Allied Trades at City College, said: “We are very proud of our students’ success. The College is a great supporter of skills competitions and encourages students to pit their skills against each other, and against students from other colleges, in both regional and national competitions in order to challenge and improve. Their achievements show the outstanding skills that our students develop whilst they study with us.”
Tested not only on their technical abilities, but also on their time management, character and commitment, this competition helps to build confidence, self-esteem and life skills. Each level of competition progresses and the winners of the regional heats, if they score highly enough, go on to compete on the European and even global stage. It is anticipated that Kane Cook will progress to the national final, which will be held at the NEC in November.
