What's it all about?

You will explore the key features of different types of organisations, the sectors in which they operate, how they are structured, and how they operate. You will also develop the skills to practically apply a range of common numerical methods to everyday business situations, including carrying out business calculations and presenting numerical data.

The skills developed by studying this qualification will give you a solid base to seek employment with greater confidence, or enable you to progress to the next level of learning.

This course is suitable for those who are interested in progressing in business or accountancy related professions. It will enable you to develop the skills that you need to contribute effectively in the workplace in a wide range of sectors.

You may be a school leaver who does not yet have any work experience, or may be returning to learning after a period away from study or employment.

Course information

There are two mandatory units:

 

Working in the business environment

  • Developing skills for the workplace.
  • Understanding how organisations operate.
  • Understanding how sales and purchases support businesses.
  • Applying business procedures to sales and purchases.

 

Using numbers in business

  • Performing simple business calculations.
  • Calculating decimals, fractions, percentages, proportions, and ratios.
  • Using tools and techniques to present numerical data.

Applicants must have a grade 4 or above in GCSE maths and English, and will be required to attend an interview.

You will be assessed through a single, 1.5 hour computer-based, computer-marked assessment at the end of the course. The assessment will involve a mix of multiple-choice and numeric gap-fill questions as well as simulated workplace activities.

The skills developed in this qualification can lead to employment in junior or supporting administrative roles in companies across a wide range of sectors, for example as:

  • accounts administrator
  • administrative assistant
  • customer service advisor.

It can also serve as a pathway to other qualifications such as the Level 2 AAT Certificate in Bookkeeping.
