If you have some experience of creative art and design and are looking to return to education, studying at College for the first time or looking to change career, then this is the course for you! You can consult our friendly careers advisors or teaching team about the right combination of modules to study to gain entry to your chosen university course when you complete your Access to Higher Education qualification.

Please note the College course title is a suggested progression route, you must check with your preferred higher education institution to ensure that this course meets their entry requirements.

What our students say …

“The course helped me to understand which is the best pathway for me to take with my art.”

“It’s given me a basic understanding and knowledge of the academic writing and research needed for university. I’ve discovered a lot about myself and developed a body of work I’m proud of. I never knew I could really ‘do’ art.”

“It has given me confidence to apply to a BA (Hons) course and take the next step in changing careers.”

“The course has enhanced my life and built my confidence in studying at an academic level prior to university. I’m now confident that I’ll complete my degree and achieve the goals I have, all due to the learning experience I’ve had here at the College.”

Course information

You’ll learn drawing and colour theory, as well as a brief but comprehensive overview of art history. Alongside this, you’ll learn core techniques for higher education, such as the importance of academic referencing, experimentation, the development of ideas and analysis of your work. Through investigation, research, teamwork and confidence in your own abilities, you will end your year with an exhibition of your art.

You’ll get hands-on experience through a broad range of projects to develop a solid grounding in the key areas of art and design.

To succeed on this course you need to be committed towards your study and focused upon your career choice. This route is designed for adult students (19+). Funding is not available for those aged 18 and under, and we would recommend that alternative vocational qualifications are considered which support progression on to further or higher education or employment.

You should have a level 2 qualification in English and a level 1 qualification in maths, however, in exceptional circumstances, it may be possible to take the course without these qualifications.

Assessment methods will include a variety of teaching and learning strategies.

This course will prepare you academically for university-level courses at the College, or for progression to a range of universities.

Please note fees are quoted for one year only.
