What's it all about?

Do you want to become a coffee barista? The art of coffee-making is a respected craft in Italy, where Baristas, its master craftsmen and women, combine their skills, knowledge, and artistry to prepare the perfect shot of espresso. This short course is delivered over two and a half days at City College Plymouth, leading to a City & Guilds Barista Skills qualification. The course will train you on how to select the best coffee beans, to grind, tamp and pour top-notch espresso-based drinks in style to keep your customers happy and coming back for more.

Course information

The course provides an introduction to products used in making beverages, where they come from, and some of the processes they go through, from growing to the final drink. The course looks at the range of equipment, safety aspects and how to operate the equipment to deliver the desired drink quality. It aims to bring together the knowledge and skills acquired to produce good quality drinks consistently. The course also covers the importance of presenting a positive personal image and the use of effective communication techniques. At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • demonstrate product knowledge
  • clean and check equipment
  • display drink building techniques
  • serve customers.

There are no specific entry requirements for this course.

A practical assignment and a short answer question test.

On successful completion, you may wish to progress to other hospitality and catering courses at the College.

Please note fees are quoted for one year only.
